■ The trial came oh in the county

I fides were eminent, and their efforts
commenfuratt —there were twelve
rnagiftrates on the bench—-tfie jury
are reported to have been enlight

They were felefted generally from
a quarter of the county, the moft
remote from the feene of facerdotal
fquabble. After a patient hearing
ot all the teftimony and the argu

morning until 4 in the afternoon,
the jury retired, and in about 15
minutes returned with a verdict in
favor of Guirey—Damages 430
dollars and all the cofts of fuit.
The adverfe counfel moved for
anew trial, but the motion was o

of the bench. —Lynchburg Star .
i Religious Entbufiafm. —On Thurf
-1 day, a man by the name of S—
living in Lynchburg, in a fir of fan
aticifm, fent the fcrycr with his bell
round the town, to inform the citi
zens, that at a givert hour there
would be a burnt Jacrifae offered up,
on the hill in front of the town.—
At the hour appointed, fevtral cafks
containing Rum, French, Brandy,
Whifkey, &c. to the amount of
400 gallons or upwards were drawn
in a dray to the fummit of the hill,
and fire fat to them. In vain did a
brother and feveral of his neighbors
prevail upon him to fell his fpirits
and diftribute the proceeds thereof
to the poor—he was unalterable—
the will of his Maker fhould be
done—and while the flames were
deftroying the avails of his i’nduftry,
he, accompanied by two blacks, in
a devout attitude, was thanking his
Creator that he was not “ like the

On Monday the 12th inft. the
commiffioners for Jones county,
commenced the fale of the lots in
Albany—it is with pleafure we fiate
that the rapid tales they met with,
furpaffes any that have taken place
in the new counties—feveral lots
fold for five hundred dollars each.
It is thought that from the beauti
ful and healthy fituation of the town
none in the new purchafe will out
rival it. They mean to proceed on
Monday the 191 b, to complete their
faies for the prefent. Twenty-two
lots fold for 7153 dollars, 50 cents.
The commiffioners have purchafed
the entire fquare of 202 1-2 acres,
and four acres adjoining it, which
includes two moft excellent

London, July 17.
The rneafures now in execution
in the Auftrian dominions are of a
two fold nature —the one for orga
nizing a National levee en maffe by
calling out the entire male popula
tion of the country capable of bear
ing arms ; and the other tor eftab
lifhing, by ballot an army of re
ferve of 52 battalions or 59,800
men, to be exercifed at given pe
riods, and to recruit the regiments
of the line. Theft arrangements
were executed with luch prompti
tude, that the contribution of Vien
na to the army of referve, amount
ing to 750 men, was raifed in a
week.
The Government has declared
thefe rneafures to be purely intend
ed for the defence of the Empire j
but a variety of cfrcumftances con
nefted with them, fo ftrongly indi
cated an approaching rupture with
France, at the date of the laft ac
counts, that the Auftrian treafury
bills had experienced a corfiderable
depreciation, and numerous fpccu
lations had been engaged in, in an
ticipation of a war.
The French Ambaflador, An
dreefife, had remonftrated on the
fubjeft cf this armament, and de
livered a letter written by Napole
on, from Bayonne, in which the
latter declared his furprife and re
gret that Auftria (hould engage in
lo extenfive a fyftem of prepara
tion, at a period too, when the fic
uation of the Continent neither cal
led for nor juft fled fuch armament.
The Auftrian Emperor anfwered,
that a period of general tranquility
Was alone the time for arrange
ments, the foie objeft of which
was the prefervation of peace, and
without effentially weakening his
military eftablifamenr, to introduce
into it a nectflary fyftem of econo
my by the lubftitution of a lefs ex

the prefent.
