safely to resume his duties as presiding
officer. Dr. Walsh, his physician, said
that the speaker was now convalescent,
with not a solitary unfavorable symp
tom, and that ha hoped to have his
patient sitting up in two or three days.
Within the last few days the speaker’s
appetite tuts been steadily growing bet
tor, and with this ability to assimilate
easily digested solid food, is coming in
creased strength-.
The speaker was consulted as to his
wishes in reference to a speaker pro
tern of the boose. He said that the
rules did not give him authority to
name a temporary successor, and that
he did not wish to express any prefer
ence, but to leave it to the members of
the house uninfluenced by him. There
was a general feeling on the part of the
Democratic members in favor of Mc
Millan, of Tennessee, as the presiding
officer.
There was an infernal meeting of the
rales committee which was attended by
several representatives who are not
members of the committee.
Burrows of Michigan, represented the
Republican minority. Reed was not
present. There was no disposition on
fhe part of the Republican members to
take advantage of any embarrass manta
arising from the speaker’s illness, and it
was decided to permit the ordinary de
tails of legislation to proceed without
obstruction or delay.

From reliable sources it is learned
that the white element have decided to

withdraw, the. result will be the forfeit

This, a prominent colored member de

had in each of the rival posts a suffi
