SILENCE ABOUT OURSELVES.
Think as little as poesible about any good
in yooraelf; torn your eyes resolutely from
any view of your acquirements, your in
fluence, your plan, your success, your fol
lowing—above all, speak as little as possi
ble about yourself. The inordinatencss ot
our selves like the putting of a lighted
torch to the dry wood, which has been
laid in order for horning. Nothing but
dnty should open our lips upon this dan
gerous theme, except It be in bumble con
fession of our sinfullness before God.
Again, be especially on the watch against
those little tricks by which the vain man
aeeks'to bring round the conversation to
himself, and gain the praise or notice
which his thirsty ears drink in so greedily.
Even if praise comes unsought; it is well,
while men are ottering it, to guard your
self by thinking of some secret cause foi
humbling yourself inwardly to God, think
ing onto what these pleaBant accents woulc
be changed if all that is known to God,
end even yourself,stood revealed toman.

THE THINGS THAT ARE LOVELY
AND LOVABLE.
Searching for his thirteen year old
daughter.
That is what Hr. E. W. Kirby, of
Cartersville, is doing just at present.
He was in Athens Saturday and the
story he told the police is an interest
ing one.
He said that there has been living in
Cartersville a doctor named Linder,who
had a ivery pretty young daughter.
Miss Linder iseig bteen years old, and
was quite a favorite with Hr. Kirby's
little girl.
“About three weeks ago,” said Mr.
Kirby, “Dr. Linder and his daughter
started out on a visit to his kinsfolks in
Northeast Georgia, and I let my little
girl go with him.
“I have never herd of them since,ex-

large favor. And this is tbe most I can di
for others. You see, sir, tbe distance
from Painesville is eight miles to this spot,
and I happen to know there is no stream
ciosaing the road that distance, and so, 6ir,
almost every one passing here from that
place is sure to have a thirsty horse.”
Mr. Harvey looked down into the gray
eyes that were kindling and glowing with
the thought of doing good to others; and a
moisture gathered in his own, as a moment
later he jogged off, pondering deeply opon
the quaint little seimon that had been de

think about it. The letter'stated that
the little girl was pleased with Hiss

Mr. Kirby left the city yesterday in
search of bis child and left orders with

A great deal of talent is lost in the world
for tne want or a little courage. Every
. day sends to their graves a number of ob-
kscure men, wbo have only remained in ob-
facurity because their timidity has prevent
ed them from making a first effort; and
who, if they could have been induct*! kto

great lengths in the career of fame. The
fact, is that to do anything in this world
worth doing we must not stand back shiv

as we can.—Sidney Smith.
