SHE WENT ON A VISIT ABSOLUTELY PURE I And Has Never Returned—The Search Being Made by Mr. B. W. Kirby, of CartersviUe—Was In Athens Yes terday. Religious Department. Da.O.W. LANE, Editor. SILENCE ABOUT OURSELVES. Think as little as poesible about any good in yooraelf; torn your eyes resolutely from any view of your acquirements, your in fluence, your plan, your success, your fol lowing—above all, speak as little as possi ble about yourself. The inordinatencss ot our selves like the putting of a lighted torch to the dry wood, which has been laid in order for horning. Nothing but dnty should open our lips upon this dan gerous theme, except It be in bumble con fession of our sinfullness before God. Again, be especially on the watch against those little tricks by which the vain man aeeks'to bring round the conversation to himself, and gain the praise or notice which his thirsty ears drink in so greedily. Even if praise comes unsought; it is well, while men are ottering it, to guard your self by thinking of some secret cause foi humbling yourself inwardly to God, think ing onto what these pleaBant accents woulc be changed if all that is known to God, end even yourself, stood revealed toman. —Bishop Wilder force. Mr. Harvey was riding slowly along the fc THE BLESSING OF PRAYER. dusty road, looking in all directions for a stream, or even a bouse where he might reliesh bis tired, thirsty horse with a’good draught of water. While be was thinking and wondering, he turned an abiupt bend in the road and saw before him a comfort able farm-house, and at the same time boy ten or twelve years old came out into the road with a small pail, and stood di rectly before him. “What do you wish, my boy?” said Mr Hai vay, stopping bis horse. “Would your horse like a drink, Bir?” said the boy respectffully. “Indeed, be would, and 1 was wonder ing where I could obtain it.” r. Harvey thought little of it, suppos ing of course, the boy earned a few pen nies in this manner, and therefore he off ered him a bit of silver, and was astonished to see him refuse it. “I would like you to take It,” he said, looking earnestly at the child, and observ ing for the first lime he limped slight ly. “Indeed, sir, 1 don't want it It is little enough 1 can do for myself or any one. 1 ame, and my back is bad, sir; ana Prsyers'does not directly take away a trial or its pain any more than a sense of duty directly lakes away the danger of in fection; but it preserves the strength of the whole spiritual fiber, so that the trial does net pass into temptation to sin. A sorrow cornea upon you. Omit prayer, and you out of God's testiog into the devil’s temptation; you get angry, hard of heart, lecklessness. But meet the dreadful horn with prayer, cast your care on God, claim him as you Father, though he seems cru el—and the paralyzing, embittering effects of pain and sorrow pass away, s stream ol sanctifying and softening thought pours into the son), and that which might have wrought your fall bat works yon the seable fruits of righteousness. Kirby, of Cartersville, is doing just at present. He was in Athens Saturday and the story he told the police is an interest ing one. He said that there has been living in Cartersville a doctor named Linder, who had a ivery pretty young daughter. Miss Linder iseig bteen years old, and was quite a favorite with Hr. Kirby's little girl. “About three weeks ago,” said Mr. Kirby, “Dr. Linder and his daughter started out on a visit to his kinsfolks in Northeast Georgia, and I let my little girl go with him. “I have never herd of them since,ex- C3pt one letter, whose postmark I could not read, which asked for money with which to come home. “It may be that they arrived safely at their destination, which was somewhere Mr! You see, sir, tbe distance from Painesville is eight miles to this spot, and I happen to know there is no stream ciosaing the road that distance, and so, 6ir, almost every one passing here from that place is sure to have a thirsty horse.” Mr. Harvey looked down into the gray eyes that were kindling and glowing with the thought of doing good to others; and a moisture gathered in his own, as a moment later he jogged off, pondering deeply opon the quaint little seimon that had been de livered so innocently and unexpectedly.— Sunlight. ally alarmed. I do not know what to think about it. The letter'stated that the little girl was pleased with Hiss Linder, but didn’t like the doctor, propose to ferret out the mystery and find my child.” Mr. Kirby left the city yesterday in search of bis child and left orders with Ibo police authorities - here to apprehend the whole party if they ran across heir.
