The Great Fistic Encounter In New

New Orleans, Sept. 7.—[Special.]—
Contrary to the opinion of those who
bet their money on the great fistic en

1 he fight was fast and furious from
the beginning, and in the twenty-first
round Corbett pnt the big Boston boy to

Both men were in fine trim. The
odds were on Sullivan, bat Corbett had
plenty of backers. Especially were
the New Orleans sports backing the
Californian.
It was Corbett’s victory from the
start. He was the aggressor and push

The Police and Sporting Men at Car-
field Park.
Chicago, Sept 7.—As the result of a
fearful tragedy which occurred at Gar
field park race track, three men are dead
and another is suffering the agonies of a
fearful bullet wound in the abdomen.
For the third time during the week,
the city police raided the park for the
purpose of arresting parties against
whom warrants were issued for viola
tions of the gaming law.
The grand stand occupants became
panic stricken and fled. The police ar
rested the officials and then started for
the stables, but found that the jockeys
bad fled. Attention was then turned to
the spectators, and one fat man was cap
tured. Turning to the stables again the
officers approached Brown, who was
standing on the roof of one stable, watch
ing the police puisne the people. With
him stood Bob Rice, another well known
racing man. Brown had repeatedly said
during the former raids that he would
allow no man to arrest him as long as he
had not violated th? law, and if a police
man attempted it be would kill him, or
be killed before be was
Dragged to the Police Station.
Officers Powell and McDowell ap
proached the shed and asked Brown
pleasantly to come down and be arrested.
Brown cnrtly said he would not be ar
rested, and tossed a few pebbles from the
gravel roof on Powell’s head. McDowell
passed on, and Powell clambered on the
roof. Brown descended, making an
effort to escape. Brown began to ran,
paying no attention to the repeated calls
of Powell that unless he halted he would
be fired upon. As no attention was paid
