nine miles from Athens near the Gin
House of L. F. Edwards, where Frank
Spence now lives, running In a south
western direction, through the land
of said L. F. Edwards, to house where
Mr. Ward now lives, then following
mostly the road to where Jesse Smith
and Wash Bowling now live, then on
through lands of said Edwards, until
reaching line of W. H. Morton, thence
along lines between lands of said Mor
ton and Edwards, thence along lines
between said Edwards and Jas.
Crane, running Into road from W,
Tuck’s, to the public road from Ar-
noldsville and more fully described
by the C. M. Strahan survey. This

W. Griffin, L. L. C. Hart, H. J. Rowe,
F. D. Gillen and R. H. McCrary re
spectfully shows:
That they have associated them
selves together for the purpose of or
ganising and carrying on the buslnesi
of a trust and banking company, un
der the provisions of Sections 1903
et seq. of the Code of Oeorgia of 1896,
end the Acts amendatory thereof, and
under the Act of the General Assem
bly of Georgia approved December
33, 1398, providing for tbe incorpora
tion of trust companies, snd do here
by declare as follows:
1. Tbe name and style of the pro
posed corporation is Athens Trust
and Banking Company.
2. The location of the principal of
fice thereof shall be |n Athens, Clarke
County, Georgia, with the right to es
tablish branch offices elsewhere.
The duration of the corporation
shall be for 30 years, with right of
renewal. ~
4. The amount of its capital stock
Is ($100,000) One Hundred Thousand
Dollars, divided into 1,000 shares of
the value of $100.00 each, with the
privilege of increasing game, accord
ing to law.
6. That the purpose and nature
of the business of the proposed cor
poration are the organization and con
duct of all such business as can be
legally conducted by either or both
Tiust Companies or Banks under tbe
laws of Georgia.

powers and privileges which the laws
of Georgia authorize the exercise of

A barn on the place of Capt. J. F.
Hart and two out-buildlngs on the M.
G. Nicholson place, occupied by the
servants of Mrs. Gaines, were de
stroyed by Are yesterday morning at
about 11 o'clock. How the fire origi
nated nobody has been able to dis
cover. The barn was destroyed with
quantity of feed stuff, and a calf was
roasted to death In the building. A
large hog was also badly burned, but
did not die from tbe burns. Tbe
damage will amount to $300 or $400.
Two residences, one about thirty feet
snd the other not more than fifty feet
from tbe burning out-houses, were In
Imminent danger and the department
did good and effective work in sav
ing theme.

COOKING EXTENSION SCHOOL.
At the extension school, which has
enrolled 110 earnest women, moat
ci whom are employed as oooks in
the white homes, the following dis
tinguished visitors were present, viz:

ton; Chancellor D. C. Barrow, Mr. and
Mrs. John D. Moss, Prof. G. G. Bond.
Mr. Anron Cohen, and Mr. R. L. Moss.
Expressions of thanks were made In
behalf of tho board of education ot
Athens to Chef A. Edelin, who had co
operated with the principal for three
years In this extension work that has
dene excellen work in reaching the
unreached, by Supt. Bond and Mr.
Cohen, in two very interesting speech

Chancellor Barrow, in an Inspiring
sroech. Indicated what such evidences
of genuine desire to learn mean both
to the colored and white people uf
this community and other communi
ties. Said he; “Wherever meetings
arc held for the colored people, they
show a great appreciation for oppor
tunities offered to learn. 1 have no
ticed this in meetings of this-kind and

have them of all ages. This ts real
evidence of progress."

Yesterday afternoon, near the cat-
nival ground an automobile which
had been left standing with the
brakes evidently lax, started down the
street of Its own motion and ran lutn
the mule team of Mr. Huggins, which
was approaching. Tbe vehicle was
damaged somewhat and Mr. Huggins
was thrown out and bruised up con
Blderably. The machine, it U said,
was driven by a lady and she did nat
know of the accident till some time
after It had occurred, and her machine
had been stopped by an automobile
man who happened to be near at the
time.

Arnold has been faithful and holds the
confidence and respect of the mem
bers of the company. The Rifles will
continue to prosper and rank well

than Commissioner John W. Calla
way, of the commonwealth of Wilkes.
He was once the big sheriff of that
big county. He has claims to Immor
tality in Georgia history also by rea
son of the 'act that he has been for
years tbe barbecue king of tbe state.
He has been sent for to superintend
barbecues in New York city, so ex
tensive did bis reputation ae a bar

Mr. Moss spoke of the Interest the
white people here are manifesting in
the work of helping to fit tbe negro
for the practical duties of life; of
their undertaking to' build an Indus
trial school, the Memorial Institute.

that convinces him more of tbe wls
dom of founding this school than to
see this large crowd of earnest work
era at the cooking exteneion school.
He spoke of the conference held some
days ago In the office of Chancellor

most prominent white people, to con
alder the ifest methods to help to
train the negro.
Principal Harris, after thanking
these gentlemen and Mr». Dr. Mable,
who also spoke encouragingly, An
nounced the prizes that will be sward
ed st the close of the work In April,
for the beet exhibits of biscuits, light-
bread, meats, etc. These prizes ar*
offered by some of the merchants ot
the city. The school Is increasing,
both in 'interest and numbers. The
enrollment Is now 110.
