The kiddies of Santa Ana, Califor
nia, were deep In mourning one day
Home weeks ago. Tho circus had
passed them by!
\\ hat was their loss, however, will
he a gain to millions of other young-
sters. for the ihow which would ha
performed before only a few hundri
in Santa Ana, will now have a whole
world of children and grown-ups
its audience*. For when the circus in
question vaueelled its Santa A nr
play-date it did so because it had
been engaged f nr scenes In Realart’s
picture “The Little Clown.” Mary
Mib'j Minter the star of the pro
duction. being seen in a particularly
appealing role as a circuit orphan,
brought up by “Toto.” a clown who
b.is been devoted to her sinsc child-
hood.
The script of the s.ory called for
a small circus of the one ring “wagon
show” variety—and fortunate Indeed
was Rcalart to secure tho Escalante
onfflt, absolutely perfect for the pur
pose. There were elephants, camels,
hours, coyotes, monkeys, all sorts of
animals, in fact—not to mentin,?
clever'riders and those agile Individ-1
mils who swing tlirough space on a
frial trapeze.
Thus the children of Santa Ana
Ioj»t out on a circus.
On the other hand, the kiddies ot
Hollywood gained one. For the “big
’top" was pitched right on a main
boulevard—and everybody and his dog
Invited to attend.'free of charge! Did

ron Is said to have secured some of
ihe most perfect crowd stuff in th
history of the photodrnma.
To make sure that the cimyna play
ers conformed eractly to strict circus
custom, Rcalart secure dthree famous
cirrus people to act as technical di
rectors of the scenes. Heading tho
list was Bert Leo, one of America’s
greatest clowns, for years with Ring-
ling’s and tho originator of ’tbe'fmr-

ing in tho technical direction were
Alice and “Mike” Rrahn. famous cnn-

picture.

“The Little Crown” will play at the I
Palace theater today. It Is an Avery,
Hopwood play, and will bo staged In
New York fallowing the F-reon re-,
lease. Mr. Hopwood is the author of
"Fair and Warmer,” “Th
Harry Carey Is seen in one of those
sympathetic roles which shows him
playing “second fiddle” to a more
romantic figure, in “The Wallop” at
the Elite today a new and thrilling
yestern picture. The sympathy is his
to the finish since It is his object to
protect his rival and f, fade-out” at the
end with a realization that romance is
over. The plot revolves around the at
tempt of a crooked sheriff to discredit
the youth who has beaten Carey to
the lovestakes. The latter puts over
some good incident in a pool parkl
and performs a timely rescue for his
unknown friend (a typically Carey
scene). Frustrated here, the villain
frames the youth on a murder charge
and the latter is faced to flee to the
mountains. This* sequence defies logic
for an innocent man is never afraid
to face the truth. Viewing It from a
strictly western angle it Is strictlv
accordnng to Hoyle since guns speak
lounder than words. The shcrlfT and
bis gang start In pursuit but the cow
boy beats them to the Impregnable
cave. His object Is to win the reward
for the capture of the murdered man's
assassin and also to aid his rival in
battling his oppressors.
The title finds its meaning when
Carey deals tho youth a terrific wal
lop, knocking him put, so that the
oehriff will he forced to gvle him the
reward. It looks like the art of
“doul)le<rossing” on the part of the
unromantic figure until the plains are
reached when he surprises the crocks
and compels them to put up their
hands.
