WESTBERRY THIAL
ENTERS TOTH DAY
Defense Attempts to
Prove Defendant Was in
Florida at Time
VALDOSTA, Ga.—(#)—The long
drawn-out Westberry murder case
entered its 10th session Thursday
with the defenfe continuing its at
tempt to prove the defendant was
in Florida the day the crime was
committed in Georgia.
Austin Westberry is on trial for
the mur(‘ers of W. H. Browning
and wife.
The state contends he killed the
couple with’ robbery as a motive.
The defense contends Westberry
was in Manatee the day the couple
was killed.
' Steve Rozier of Manatee testi
fied Wednesday that Westberry
‘was at his house on the day of the
‘murder. Other witnesses testified
along similar lines.
A Jegal tangle over presenlta
tion of a certificate of a baby’s
death — drawn :n:o the mesh
through statements that the wit
ness recalled the date he saw
Westherry in Florida because it
was the day after his baby died—
threatened an impasse until the
court ruled for the state.
Trading Brought
To Standstill on
~ Security Markets
- By VICTOR EUBANK
NEW YORK.—(AP)—Pre-holi
day apathy brought trading in the
security markets almost to a
standstill today and prices gen
erally shifted about lazily over an
extremely narrow range.
Stocks started out with a mild
rally, -led by: the -aleohols, but the
moderate upward flurry was of
brief duration and most quotations
soon drifted back to around their
levels of yesterday. Many opera
tors had already left town for the
protracted week-end. Wheat was
a trifie heavy at one time, but
other gains and cotton fluctuated
in unimportant fractions. The dol
lar sagged a bit in foreign ex
change dealings but there was no
pronounced pressure against the
American currency. Bonds moved
listlessly.
| ATHENS MARKETS
' The Athens cotton market
closed today at 9 1-8 cents. The
previous close was 9 1-4 cents.
PRICES IRREGULAR
NEW YORK.—(AP)—Cotton was
quiet today and prices moved ir
regularly within a narrow range.
An opening decline under ‘southern
%elling and liquidation was followed
by rallies on covering and trade
buying, but after selling up from
9.59 to 9.66 for December, prices
eased slightly.
Cotton futures closed barely
‘stead'y, 6 to~ 11 lower.
