The Kappa Sigma fraternity is airing their rugs and furniture in the yard of the old Quillian home next to the HEpiscopal church, while the Phi: Eps are trying to iget settled in their new home on the corner of Milledge and Mil lledge Heights. The Kappa Sigmas | formerly occupied the stuceo house ‘on the ecorner of Milledge and Hancock, above the hospital. ' ' Rushing for the fraternities has already begun, and rumor has i that one group has pledged twenty five freshmen already, closed lits lists, and is now rushing for an other fraternity. Many of the big cars seen around Athens won't be here long, for they are brought here for rushing puposes. . Forority rushing won’t start un til October 3, but quite a few of the old co-eds are back this year already looking them over. The Phi Mus are busy getting their mew house ready. They are mov ing this year from the old Dorsey home on Milledge to the Strick land home on the corner of Mil ledge and Hill, ' The Alpha Delta Pis, (hettet knwn as A. D. Pis) established ‘here last year, will not have a sorority house this year, bu¢ they will all stay with Mrs. J. V. H. Rucker on Dearing street, A tea will be held the day be fore the North Carolina footbhall game by the girls Pan-Hellenic council. As this date is before of ficial rushing season opens, the girls will be invitéed but will not come accompanied by upper-cliss women. Ag one co-ed expressed it “This gives the good sisters a chance to look over the new girls with a cold, fishy glance, instead of being upset by ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’.” The girls in the Coordinate col lege will be eligible for member ship in the sororities, but the lat es¢ announcement is that they will not be allowed to stay in the ‘houses. The same ruling prevailed last year over freshman and soph }omore girls at the College of Ed ucation. Harvey Bailey Trial Judge Attacks Kidnaping Racket (Contiuyea from Page One) fendants from Minneapolis and St. Paul, was ordered . released. Isadore Blumenfeld and Peter Valder will learn Monday morn ing whether they must leave their cages to the jury. The four others—Barney Ber man, Clifford Skelly, Sam Kronick and Sam KXozberg—were given no encouragement by the judege, who declared that they rhay not have know they were handling Urschel money, but that they knew they had “hot” money in their posses sion. The prosecution traced SI,BOO and SSOO of the $200,000 paid for Urschel's release to these four Twin Cities defendants, whose plea is that they knew nothing of the kidnaping but handled the money in a liquor deal. Judge Vaught turned down the plea of an attorney for R. G. (Boss) Shannon, his wife Ora, and son, Armon, that they were coer ced under the death threats by Bates and Kelly to keep the kid naped oil man on their farm near Paradise, Tex. i “The evidence,” he said, ‘“shows that the Shannons knew there was a kidnaped man at their home. If they knew he was kidnaped and they guarded him, then they would ibe just as guilty as if they had kidnaped him, transported him and collected the ransom, “Fear of fndividual punishment is no excuse for a violation of the law”. “There is a revolutionary pro ceeding today,” said Judge Vaught! when defense attorneys had fiw ished arguing their assertions that the prosecution testimony had‘ been insufficient to convict. ‘ ‘Kidnaping is as bad as murder, if not worse. There is no greater menace in the country today. In interpréting the act under which 'this case is heard I bear in mind that its purpose is to prevent all kidgnaping.” ‘ Rewards totalling $15,000 were pledged today for the capture of Kelly and his wife, Kathryn, by a group of Oklahoma citizens ’headed by C. F. Colcord, capitalist and pioneer peace officer. ; _The price on Kelly's head was set at SIO,OOO, that on his wife's ’at $5,000.
