Echo From The Elks |
Convention in Atlanta
They were reminiscing when one
of them recalled a funy occurence
when the Elks club held their na
tonial convention in Atlanta five or
ten years ago. It seems two fellows
came to the convention and were in
separrole for the first few days.
Then they both got drunk and se
pacated. It was the day the na
tional head of the organization was
to be installed apd the taller of the
two fellows was frantic. He rushed
from one person to another asking
|'Where’s Willie?” No one seemed
to know. Finaly the time for the
installation came. The hall was
quiet and the newly elected exalt
ed ruler began the procession down
the aisle to the platform. Grand
jiose music was being played and
the solemnity of the occasion lay
over the large mnumber of people
present like a blanket. Step by step
the procession filed towards the
platform in time to the majestic
strains of the organ. Suddenly a
figure hurtled owut of the seats,
grasped the new exalted ruler’s
coat lapel and gasped in libored
tones.: “You seen Willie",
Thoughts While Strolling
Anywhere in Athens
Just as I stepped out of the
Strand theater Meoanday that heavy
rain started. And the pictyre ll'd
just seen was “‘Deluge,” with all
the buildings in New York wiped
out by a tidal wave Cheerful—Just
like when the circug was here and
there was a movie about a circus
fire the day befcre—Funny about
that thing painted across the Phi
Mu house steps—you know, the old
Strickland home. The Phi Mu’s got
40 pledges during rushing this
year and some wag painted in
black ink, that has to wear off,
“Forty, Million Freshmen can’t be
Wronge(’.” To which someone else
appended—in red paint, I believe—
“Oh yeah?"-—(;lenn\ Ramsey of the
Assocated Press is writing up the
U. D, C. convention for them—Odd
that so few people have noticed
that cigarette smoke is blue. before
yvou inhale it, and grey when it
comes out of your lungs—try it

Davis's cat has taken up with us,
He's been at home for the last two
days, anl he's almost won us over
from dogs. He's a prettylgrey Mal
tese-Persian cross, and, if you don'g
think he's smart, ask the Doctor.
Will some one who attended the
American Legion convention tell
me who started that “Where is
Elmer?” And why? .

Dr. Weltner predicted that all

The Omnibus Passes
On A Hot News Tip
The Dbiggest story concerning
Athens since the tornade ripped
through the town a couple of years
ago is due to break at any ‘time
now. The story has been cooking
up for a good while and its just
about ready to be served. It's all
very “shush, shush” at present but
the Omnibus stumbled on it by
chance. However cooperation was
asked until the story is ready to
break and ‘here's cooperation. You
have to wait a day or so,

'BOMBSHELL aTARS
HARLOW AND TRAGY
Appear Together at Pal
ace Tonight; ‘‘Sporting
Chance’’ at Strand
Two of Hollywood’'s most color
ful personalities are co-starred for
the first time in * “Bombshell,”
showing at the Palace for the last
times tonight. They * are -« Jean
Harlow and = Lee Tracy, and to
gether they form as unusual a
team as the movies have present
ed. ; A
Harlow. as the glamorous. Lola
Burns, seductive screen. . siren,
plays a role that might easily
have been based upon her own
present life in Hollywood, for she
herself has been publicized in
mueh the same way as the chars
acter whom she portrays.
And Lee Tracy, as the one who
does the publicizing, is as wvibrant
a personality “as ever, perhaps even
more so, for he is seen in the part
of one of a movie company’s most
powerful employes —the publicity
man. And what he doesn’t consid
er material for publicity is some
thing that the public already
knows. .
“Bombshell” is satire of the
movie lots amnd their people. Per
haps movie stars and their -direc
tors, managers, families, and pub
licity men are not as ridiculous
4s the picture makes them seem,
but they furnish plenty of mate
rial for a fast-moving comedy,
with faster-moving lines. :
