KENTUCKY EDITOR
JAILED 24 HOURS
Freed After Being Heldi
For Refusal to Give
Name of Letter Writer i
FRANKFORT, Ky —(®)—Vance
Armentrout, acting editor of the'
Luuisvi}le Courier-Journal, 's),)enti
an hour in jail because he refused'
to reveal the name of a person
who wrote a letter to his paper. |
He was speedily freed Wednes- |
day by County Judge L. B. Ham-’
ilton, who called his ~ confinement
illegal and granted aj writ of ha—i
beas corpus. ]
A letter signed “A. Member of’
the House of Representatvies” wgs
sent to the Courier-Journal's
“Point of View"” column. .‘.’lembersl
of the lobby investigating com
mitee of the Kentucky house con-!
strued it as reflecting on the in- |
tegrity of the speaker of the]
house. ;
Hugh Bullitt, chairman of the
committee, demanded the name of
the writer. Armentrout replied’
that the names of people who
write letters to = the editor are
kept confidential if they desire it. \
“I wish 1 could conscientiously
give you the name,” he said. ‘I
simply cannot ‘do it in justice to
persons who write confidéntial let
ters to the paper.” |
Judge Hamil_ton, himself a for
mer legislator, said the editor was
illegally confined because the state
statutes require that a person
charged with contempt by an. in
vestigating committee shall be
granted a trial or allowed legal
representation ~at the ecommitte
hearing. s ‘
When the editor entered for his
fleeting sojourn in jail, prisoners
greeted him with a ‘“kangaroo
court” reguwlation which read: '
“For entering without consent
of prisoners, 50 cents or 50 licks
(with a black strap)”. The editor
paid the cash. ¢ i
The president does not have the
constitutional power to ‘pardon
state prisoners, - i '
