We see that the Oconee county board of education re-elected Claude Phillips superintendent of the Oconee county high school. He's had that position for the last two vears, and it was largely due to his efforts that the athletic building in Watkinsville was built, Beginning with a small amount of money, he devised means by which other money, in small amounts, wag added. We happen to Know a lot of folks out in Watkinsville and the way they all got behind Mr. Phillips was a real compli ment. There aren’t many folks who can get a community to work with him like that. The building was named “Phillips Hall” in ree ognition of his work, Congratula tions, Mr. Phillips, and congratu lations to you, teo, Oconee county. About two thousand people want to the good will frolic and street dance in Lexington last week. The dance didn't end until 12 o'clock, ‘and the street was packed with folks doing square and round dancing. If you go to Lexington and see a fellow walking up and down who can be described Dbest by saying it's a smile with a man tacked on, it's probably Howard Amason, who thought up the idea and who deserves most of the credit for its success. The Geor gian Collegiate Orchestra from Athens furnished the music. Well, Jefferson citizens are go ing to have the pleasure of in cluding Professor H. J. W. Kizer and his family on their census list for another year, at least—and probably for years to come. Pro fessor Kizer was recently re elected superintendent of Martin Institute, a position he’s held for the past five years. Since he's been in Jefferson, he’s made him self popular with everybody through his interest in church work and civic affairs, as well as his splendid educational activi- . New mayor and couneil were elected at Greensboro yesterday. Around 150 people registered and were qualified to vote in -the election, which is a mighty lot of interest, considering that there Wwasn't anybedy to vote against. C. E. STARZEL % Associated Press Staff Writer. ~ NEW YORK.— #) —lmmediate reorganization of United Aircraft and Transport corporation—separ ating afr liner. and manufacturing subsidiaries—was proposed Satur day by Philip G. Johnson, presi dent, “in order that the United Air Lines system may be in a po sition to participate in the bidding for air mail contracts in the fu ture.” His announcement was the first official intimation from any air mail carrier that reorganization might be effected to gqualify for bidding on mall routes. | Congress has not enacted legis lation covering permanent awards of new contracts, but the adminis tration has indicated that far reaching changes in corporate structures would be necessary be fore any of the companies, whose contracts were cancelled, would be eligible again to enter bids. . The United proposal was ex plained in a letter to stockholders secomparying the., corporation’s 1988 financial report. It anno.un ced the share-owners annual meeting, scheduled for April 24, has been postponed hy the direc tors until the reorgamization plao can be completed. Johnson's letter pointed out “it iߢ highly probable” that divorce ment of carriers and manufactur ers “will be stipulated as a condi tion to the re-letting of air mail contracts,” adding ‘your directors believe no time should be lost” in establishing United Air lines “as “an independent group.” Manufacturing subsidiaries would be grouped into two organizations, Johnson'’s letter stated, with the Bastern “group centered in the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft com pany and asgociated firms in Hartford, Conn., and the Boening Airplane company in Seattle, pro viding the nucleus for the West ern concerns. A committee of three directors, Joseph H. Ripley, Joseph F. Mc- Carthy, secretary and controller of the corporation, and Johngon, is formulating the reorganization plan, it was stated. The president, Mrs. Grady Pittard, called the 'meeting to order. Reports were ! given on projects in clothlqg, home improvement, nutrition and the Golden Rule plan. “Better Supper”’ demonstration will be sponsored by this club. Those tak ing part in this demonstration are: Mrs. Armstrong Haynes, Mrs. Grady Pittard, Mrs. John i Hardeman and Mrs. W. R, Coile. '« A demonstration was given on one-dish meais, using recipe given last Sunday on ‘{Baked Eggs and Rice in Tomato Sauce.” Twelve members were present, Mrs. I, B. Thornton has charge of the hot lunches at White Hall. Miss Lucile BEdwards is work ing with Mrs. Lillian Roam in the Winterville hot lunc¢h room. Hinton-Brown 4-H club girls met Wednesday for their regular meeting. | Mrs. J. P. Nunnally, in charge of hot lunches at Hinton-Brown, ser vices a variety of lunches. Monday she gave the children cabbage and cured meat; Wednesday was “stuf fed egg” day; and Friday, the re gular “gingerbread” day; vegeta ble dishes were given Tuesday and Thursday. ‘ Friday was ‘ice cream day” at Gaines’' School for the lucky con testants. The rooem winning in the cooperation food contest for hot lunches was served ice cream by Mrs., Wehunt in charge. Mr. and Mrs. W, R. Coile .and family, of Winterville, are spend ing the week-end in Ringold, The Princeton 4-H c¢lub met on Wednesday afternoon for a sewing lesson. It wag reported that Miss Inez Ale wine, secretary, and Miss fLucy Dunean, treasurer, had moveqd into another community. Miss Eunice Mills was elected the new secretary and treasurer of the club. Miss Louise LaCount end Miss Lois Terry were appointed © clothing chairmen, and their duties were outlined by Miss Thompson, home demonstration agent. / ' Migses Florence LaCount, Cor ing Dixon and Mr. Belvin Terry were appointed for the reecreation committee, A report was given on the play night which took place in the Gaines’ community, The new committee wag advised to plan ‘something similar for their com munity. . A distribution was made of the new record books and booklets containing the outline for the first year clothing course were given out. The construction of laundry bags and sewing bags was discus sed, and plans were made for the club members who had not com pleted these prolects to begin work on them. ’ ’ Miss Thompson showed the club girls a new type of table cover which she had constructed from remnants gotten from the Prince ton mills. It was suggested that the girls might improve their homes with new tabie covers. @irls were advised to keep ac curate records of their home prac tices in food preparation and serv ing, clothing construetion, garden ing and home improvement. Miss Thompson was invited to have lunch with the children and enjoyed a vegetable chowder pre pared by Miss Margaret Sorrells the hot lunch worker. Miss Sor rells is to be commended for her good work in the preparation and serving of the hot lunch, The Oconee Heights 4-H club met at the home of Mrs. R. G. Mar tin on Thursday afternoon. The meeting was called to order by the president, Miss Jimmie Martin. A repory wasg given on the enter tainment held at the community school building on Friday night, March 30th. The program con sisted of two one-act plays, special music by Miss Serena Martin, and a number of stunts. Pop-corn balls, rundy and peanuts were sold, The girls clearéed $8.60 which is to be used for the improvement of their elub room. The club discussed plans for the improvement of their ‘club room and decided to begin work so it might be ready for the summer meetings., Miss Thompson suggest ed that they have a party for their mothers, when the club room was finished. The outline for the first year’s work in clothing was given out and the construction of laundry bags was discussed. The first year girls were asked to begin work on their bags. it & ! Reports were given by the club girls on the home practices they were doing. Miss Pinkie Fowler reported a wild flower garden which she had in tHe making, Miss Mildred ‘Lester reported a project on spring house-cleaning and re novating furniture. Those who did not |bring bread were served bread by | Mrs. Thornton. The remains of our Idinner left on the plates amounted ito about one quart. We were 'specially interested in etiquette ob ‘servance, while the children were eating. After each group was iserved someone in the group asked la ‘“Dblessing” then they ate, care |fully handling spoon and very lquiet and orderly. The teachers in all schools certsinly cooperated with each undertaking of the hot lunch workers. _ We hope some interested friends will visit some of the schools at the hot lunch hour and enjoy it with the children and teachers, A loat of bread is the admittance fee, : The County Hot Lunch workers met at the Court House on Friday afternoon at¢ 2:16 o'clock. Those present were Mrs. Ralph Wehunt, Mrs. J. P. Nunnally, Miss Mar garet Sorrells, Miss Florine Shack elford, Mrs. Lillian Roan and Miss Frances Parr. The two new work ers, Miss Lucile Edward of Win terville, and Mrs, 1. E. Thornton, of W.aterville, were not present. A report was given on the week’s work done in hot lunch for each community. Interesting and fav orable reports were given on egg cookery done in the communities this week, using nformation got ten from lasy week's lesson in hot lunches. The subject for this week was soup making. The preparation of soup was discussed and four kinds of soup were demonstrated, name ly, thickened tomato bouillon, vezetable soup, beef and vegetable chowder, and cream of spinach soup. The use of Milkwheato was made as a thickeming agent. This product has been made a federal distribution thig week. The work ers were encouraged to use this highly nutritious and tasty food stuff. It was decided to meet lzter next Friday afternoon and th: time was set for 3 o'clock, Cereal and vegetable chowder: 1-4 cup cook cereal. (Wheatena or hominy grits) 1-4 cup carrots 1-4 cup peas 1-4 cup canned tomatoes 1-4 cup diced potatoes 2 Thsp). grated onion 1 1-2 cup milk 1 cup boiling water 2 Tbsp. butter 1-2 ts. salt. Cut vegetables into uniform sizes. Put them in boiling water to which the salt has been added. Boil un til tender but not soft, Pour off water and add butter, Scald milk and add the cooked cereal. Stir until the mixture begins to thick en. Then add the vegetables. Cook for two minutes and serve piping hot. John Edmond Thrasher Laid to Rest Sunday Funeral services for John Ed mond Thrasher, 84, were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from Salem Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. W. H. Davis of the Bishop M. E. church, ofticiating. Inter ment was in Salem Cemetery, Bernstein Funeral home in charge, Mr. Thrasher died Saturday at his home in Farmington after an illness of two years.
