CHAPTER V
FOREWORD
At Cannes, Mary is accepted
at once by Ladv Riversleigh’s
gay crowd. To her surprise
she discovers that Tommy
Trent, rich, amusing, irrespon
sible plavboy whom she had
known in New York is there.
They go to a gay party,
The partv at Nina Portalaisse’s
was all that Lady Riversleigh had
said it would be—it was even more.
Old and voung, of all nationalities
and seemingly of all ranks, were
theré, dancing, drinking, singing
and making love. In the wild throng,
Mary was surprised to see the Bag
dalls —the Major one of the most
formal of British army officers, his
wife even more conservative if such
a thing were possible, and their
daughter who was so drab she Jooked
and acted like a middle-aged spin
gter . Evidently the pace was too
awift for them, for they were about
to Jeave. ¢
\“*Oh-ho!’’ taunted Tommy Trent,
.~ 80 you are really Lady Rexford --
not Mary Watts, after all. You look
like vourself — you acted like it
until you bumped into those frozen
faces and then we poor whité-trash
don’t mean a thing to you.’’
“4Quiet’’ said Mary . ‘‘They're
friends of Philip’s.”” =
*‘Mary, are you ashamed of your
old friends?’’
“4Of course not — but I can’t see
-any sensc in snubbing — or shockins
pew ones. Just to prove I’'m the old
‘uu{‘,elet’s dance this one.’’
‘‘Let’s have a drink first — it’s a
rule of the house.”’,
\**Right-o."’ ; ;
, - Erskine, who had decided to go
to the party even if Mary and Trent
had left him behind, shook his fist
at them in mock anger, as he entered
the room and went in search of Lady
Riversleigh. He refilled her glasses
and got himself a drink,

Important Meeting of
Restaurant Operators

Will 8¢ Held Friday
Thers will be a very important
meeting of the local restaurant op

It is imperative that all persons
engaged in the operation of res

broken away from him and was run
ning through the garden with Tom
my chasing her, :
“‘Just two happy children’’ said
Aunt Hetty approvingly.
Erskine was not so sure but he
said no more. After all he did have
a hangover and no one wanted a
gloomy person at a gay party. /
Mary gave Tommy a good chase
before he eaught up with her at the,
edge of the pool. She stretched out.
her arms and threw baek her head
to the welcome breeze. Exedpt for
her clothes, she looked like a little/
girl who had been romping and had
stopped “only long enough to catch
her breath, before being off again,

hand and placing it on his heart.
¢ Another step and it would have.

. “My head’s swimming’’ laughed’
‘Mary. - ¥
“You'd better be’’ said Tommy.’
And with that he took her arm and
pulled her into the pool.
“1N kill you for this’’ said
Mary, but there was no real anger
in her voice. .
[ As a matter of fact, she liked the
cool plunge, but it was not easy,
swimming with her clothes on, 80 'in
a moment, she climbed out of the
pool and made for one of the gay
little bathing ecabins nearby. She
took off her dripping clothes and put
on some bright beach pajamas sie
found and came back to find Tommy,
sitting on a divan, singlng. As she
looked at him and down at her own
attractive, but unusual apparel, she
suddenly felt very serious. ; i
‘*What now, Lady Mary’’ said
Tommy, sensing what she was think
ing. ‘‘We're outeasts-—what now?’’
Then without warning, before she
realized what was happening, he
kissed her. She pulled herself away
}from him. Again he kissed her and
’then she faced him stérnly, « =
“‘What makes you think youn ean’
get away with that?’’ . i
‘1 wanted to —~ I’'ve been want-

‘‘You’ve spoiled everything’’ she
said, ‘‘And just when I was having
such a glorious time.’’ ]
‘‘When girls like you turn into
prudes—? T

don’t want to kiss you, you have no
right to say that. You're erazy.’’
““All'right, be cross. This swell"
marriage ‘lgas goxie to your head.”’
“‘Perhaps’’ said Mary gently, “‘it
bas ione to my heart.'’ <
¢As it should'’ said Tommy, With
a sudden ehgngle in mood. “I'm
sorry, Mary, if T offended you.: Mz
one excuse is that I lost my head.!
Don’t take it too seriously, dear.
Let’s be friends.”’ ' -
She held out her hand and he took®
it gently in his. : A
“‘We’ll forget it,’’ she said. ‘l'm)
fond of you, Tommy — I always
have been. It was my fault as much,
as yours. This place goes to ome’s
head.”’ ; .
‘“Yes, — and not altogether yes'’,
said Tommy, in a low voice. *‘l'
want to tell you, Mary, I’d marry,
you if you wele free — and would
have me. I've never said that to
any woman, before, , I've never felt
:}ufis way about any one in all my,
ife.’ : i 8
Mary was touched, but her instinct
told her to make light of this. ‘* Why,
me of all people?’’ she asked.\
‘‘Because you have breadth’and
nnderstanding and you know ‘what
it’s all about., You're honest and
you can laugh.”’ ! '
His arm had gone rouad her snd
he drew her, unresisting, to him. He
kissed her tenderly, She must do
something. This could not go on. .
i “I'd like a drink’’ . she, said.
