Most of the numbers chosen were from the earlier composers, some in modern arrangements. Mr. Dieckmann opened the reci tal with Bach’s Tocecata and Fugue in d mionr on the organ. This has been heard occasgsionally in Athens as a piano number, and was given recently Atlanta by the Minnepo, lis Symphony Orchestra. In the hands of Bach the toccata and fugue attained an unsurpassed grandeur. Mr. Dieckmann's mas terly handling of the organ was evidenced in his rendition of this difficult selection. ' ° & Mis:i Claire Harper's first num ber was by Vivaldi, a contemporary of Bach—a sonata written origi nally for violin and bass, but ar ranged by Respighi for violin and piano. Her second selection was the “Chanson Lotis XIIL” by Fran_ cois Couperin * written™ for -clavier and arvanged for violin and piano by Igreisder. This -is the" first of a two-movement dance form resem PERSONAL MENTION ‘ ™ and Mrs John Washburn, | L M s Herman Stegeman, and Het ( mat Stegeman i 1 all of Athen pent Frid i 4 \ " A ta ¢ Attant h¢ X 'at Mountair | D! 116 - - = ' N A Bunawras Vi N 0] ¢ Via A { N r Fa N ¢ ) ( W i t C . » \1 W D ! 0 \ * .~ @ \ Hent W Ma nd g Mamish R ’ t = R s \lhert MeDuff nd liss Will t Atlanta were A . - y ore | y Aiker short ' visi . - - M 1 M Ja Frost A < -~ . Miss Harper’s brilliant playing and gracious manner have already made her popular with Athens au diences. » Mr. John Hoffman's rich bari tone was heard to good advantage in his two dramatic selections: “111 Lacerato Spirite” from Verdi's opera “Simon Boecanegra’” which is little known outside of Italy; and Schubert’'s “The Erlking,” per, haps the greatest of all the compo sitions of this great song-writer. Mr. McDowell cloted hte program with Bach's famous Chaconne, his most popular piece of violin musice, transceribed for the piano by Bu soni. This form, built upon a ground-bass, was used by the com, poter with great inspirgtion. Mr. McDowell as accompanist and as golo pianist showed himself an ar tist, The informality of these Thurs day evening musicals isi part of their charm. That they are well attended by university students .and by townspeople is witness of the appreciation with which. mem bers of the music faculty. are re_ garded in Athens. e —CHARLOTTE NEWTON.
