AKRON, 0. (Special)—Factories
of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.
are running night and day, six days
a week, with four six-hour shifts,
making the uew G-3 ‘tire, latest ad
dition to the automobile tire field.
Goodyear dealers in all sections re
port material sales increases since
the advent of the new tire—hence
the factory activity. The tire, the
company’s engineers claim, gives 43
per cent more non-skid mileage, with
a flatter and thicker tread, wider rid
ing ribs, more center traction and
more non-skid blocks.
Contrary to the hazy impressions
of many laymen, tires are mnot
stamped out by a huge machine on
the order of a doughnut mold. A

visit to the giant Goodyear fac
tories here reveals the many in
teresting operations necessary to
build a tire.
Three elements in a tire—rubber,
fabric and compounds—meet and
merge at different stages in the
process. Much of the rubber for the
Goodyear G-3 and other tires is
grown on the Goodyear plantations
in Sumatra. It is shipped in bales
which are cut into chunks here in a
machine knows as a *pie-cutter.”
Giant cylinders make these chunks
and the compounds one integral
mass ready for the tire fabric.
Much of the fabric is made in the
company’s textile. mills from cotton
grown on the Goodyear plantation in
Arizona. After a warming process,
the fabric is run through the triple
rolls of a calendar where the com
pounded rubber is worked into it,
emerging as rubberized cloth. An air
bag is inserted in the newly-built tire
and it goes to the “pit,” or vulcaniz
ing room.
SOMETHING'S FISHY
TOWANDA, Pa—Anglers went
out on Lake Nepahwin for fish
during one of the summers hottest
days, and eameé back with a cake
of ice. B
' They said they brought up the
ice on one of their lines after it
apparently had been pinned to the
laks bottom by a piece of iron.
Ice cream replaced fish on the
day’s bill of fare.

After rigid inspections and ma
chine-wrapping, the new tire goes to
one of the 60,000 Goodyear dealers
and distributors scattered all over
the globe. &
Constant, careful inspection at
every step is one of the outstanding
features of the process. No tire with
the slightest flaw is ever allowed to
get by this corps of lynx-eyed inspec
tors.
The twenty-four hour humming of
the Goodyear plants is adding con
stantly to the company’s outstanding
record of 215,000,000 tires built since
its organization in 1898 — millions
more than by any other manufac
turer. Of this enormous output 56
per cent was built in the last seven
years.
A train of 110,000 freight cars, 830
miles long, would be requireg to ship
all of these 21%,000,000¢ Goodyear
tires. Laid end to end these tires
would reach more than “100,000
miles, or four times around the
equator. A
