Among the new d-esses now making appearance as street costumes
is that shown at left of smooth black crepe trimmed with gold fasten
ers. It collar and cuffs are of black and gold striped safin. With it
is worn a small brimmed hat of black velour, black bag and gloves of
stitched kidskin. Another charming fall costume (right) comes in sheer
brown wooi with yoke and small epaulets of taffeta. Note the corded
felt beret that's worn low over the right eye.

' MISS GENEVIEVE
| LAWRENCE GIVES
PIANO RECITAL
‘Wednesday evening, Mrs. Mar«
garethe Morris Parrott presented
Miss Genevieve Lawrence, one of
her talented pupils, in an artistic
recital of piano music., «
Though the audience was small,
the enthusiastic applause that
greeted the performer at the close
of each number demonstrated the
appreciation of the listeners for
the excellent work manifested by
both teacher and pupil.
Miss Lawrence’s performance of
two Bacéh numbers, the stataly
“Sarabande” (French Suite) and
the lively “Passepied” (English
Suite), with its contrasting A-B-A
sections, showed outstanding work
both in technic and interpretation.
The Allegro movement of Sonata
No. 8 in B flat (Mozart) closed
the classic group. x
Following this were three mod
ern selections: “Habernera’” (Cha<
brier), interesting for its unfisuaf
rhythmical charaeteristics; “Evens~
ing in Seville,” a composition col=
orful in its modern harmonic
structure, by the® eminent French
composer and author, Walter Nie
mann; sparkling and brillant
was the third and last of the mod~
ern works, “Valeik,” by Mowlf
The style of Mendelssohn—the -
romanticist — was perceptible :n
the first movement of the only
concerto this composer wrote for
the piano (G minor), as interpre=
ted by Miss Lawrence, with Mrs.
Parrott playing the orchestral pu'éj
at the second piano. s
This recital showed good bals
ance iu program = material that
was well designed to meet the
nceds of the student, as well as
being an excellent medium for
improving self-expression, technic,
pedaling, and other difficult points
involved in the study of piano=
forte playmg., —N. M. D, ¢
