Rumors that the two physiciansl
and_O'Leary had not stopped at
pleading guilty, but had madel
full confessions, arose a few hours‘
after they appeared in court.
‘Melvin_H. Purvis, chief of the
federal . bureau of investigation,
would not confirm reports. that
the three had agreed to testify
against Piquett.
Piquett is charged with direct
ing the plot whereby the two
gangsters, since slain, sought by
plastic surgery to conceal their
identities. Federal agents said he
fleq his office Friday when he re
ceived a tip that they were after
him. He was captured near his
home. !
The others under arrest are Wil
liam Finerty and hig wife, Ella,
and Marie Conforti. §‘hey pleaded
not guilty to charges of harboring
Van. Meter. Federal operatives
said Van Meter and the Conforti
woman . had lived at the Finerty
home in Calumet City, 111. .~
Bonds of $5,000 each were set
for the two women, and SIO,OOO
for Finerty. It was pointed out
‘that' Miss Conforti was a _parole
‘violator and no bond was neces

The afrests were made by fed

the ' bureau of . investigation, and
J. Edgar Hover, head of the div

Asked whether Piquett had
given . }he’ Dillinger gang more

“f% oan tell you that other char
ges will be made against him.”
Piquett’s hearing was set for
September 7.
