ed the insane idea that she couldl
fling herself in the alr and turn a%
half somersault and catch by thei
heel of one foot on a swinging
trapeze bar. For weeks and weeks, |
she spent more time in the net intn!j_
which she fell constantly with thei
repeated failure, than she did ml
the air. However her childish
pranks of swinging on tree branch-&
es high in the air or at the loose|
end of ropes or climbing vines stood]
her in good hand, so she was not@
frightened by these falls, Her ae-|
termination was rewarded and now|
she rarely falls as she performsxl
this most astounding feat as a|
claimax so her aerial act with the
Russell Bros. circus, her #act being
one thrill after another.
It is generally presumed thag all
circus talent develops from fami
lies who have been associated with
the circus. Not so with Athleta.
None of her folks were ever iden
tified with the amusement profes
sion and they opposed her taking
up. such work as a profession.

was thrilling the circus crowds,
she said: “I am not afraid. I sat
isfy myself that my rigging and
conditions are safe. I go about my
work with an earnest desire to en
tertain and thrill, anq I trust the
unknown quantities or hazards to
a kind providence who has up to
the present been very gracious to
me. I love my work and am thrill
ed by the thrills T give the audi
ence. When I fall or get hurt I
know that I have not co-ordinat
ed prepplory by that T mean in
some way I have neglected to do
the righ¢ thing in the right way at
the right time, and my accident is
a reminder to be more careful.’”
As to he, circus career, Athleta
declared she loved it because it
kept her living in the great out
doors. and she can swim, romp
around or tint photographs (which
is her hobby) or enjoy nature’s
beauty.
