| CARLISLE COBB TESTS
| A THEORY AND WINS
i (Continued From Page One)
!:m it stand at that, refusing as
Carlisle did, to engage in perscnal
solicitation. But in most ecases
they were prompeted by a gargan
tuan respect for their own abilities
and standing 1n the community.
Not so Carlisle. What.he offerad
to the voters was hig independeiit
spirit. “If' I get licked”., he toid
his friends, “I can take it, and i
won’t be a calamity. I don't HAVE
ty» go to the legislature. But if |
do go, I want to be free. I would
r’t be worth anything to the peo
ple who sent me if I wasn't free”.
And that was his issue.
Not to make it a one-sided af
fair, Carlisle repeatedly urged the
voters to be independent them
selves, to vote their convictions,
but he didn’t ask them to vote for
him. He hammered away, giving
1| voice t 0 hig belief that people
S'shou»ld be free to vote their own
s | convictions, wtihout fear. because,
« | he said, that is the basis of real
g | political and economic liberty. And
!that was issue.
' | Few men could have 80 success
' 'fully smashed the traditional he
' | lief that a candidate must “get cut
| and see the voters.” Carlisle didn’t
’:,u-r._\-, “I haven’t the time to ses the
! | woters.” He had plénty of time, but
| he used it writing speeches whera: |
tiin he dramatized his issue—inde
| pendence—not a truculent pugnac
lity, no, that's not Carlisle’s concep- ‘
:tion of independence, but that
| spirit of freedom of political ac
| tion which characterizes a Borah,
{a Carter Glass, or a George Nor
| ris, who time after time have been |
| elected to the United States sen- |
late, and who are so consistently
;‘innonsistent' that their home-folksl
would be shocked beyond recovery
| if they “went along,” while a&aun_chl
| party-men throughout the country
| regard the trio as renegades. But'l
{ they keep on going bhack to the
gsonnto. and they keep on being in-l
. dependent.
‘ And most of their home people
{and a great many others keep on
| being proud of them.
i Carlisle may have established a
|pn=cedent in Georgia.
i ANNOUNCEMENT
i I wish to take this opportunity
|to thank the many friends who
!\'otpd for me in yesterday’'s elec
j tion, and T bhear no malice to any
{ one who did not see to to vote for
{me. The fine vote of c(mfldencel
given me leaves me ever grateful
