Preston Named Supervis
or of Farm Census for
This Division
Headquarters of the third farm
census districy will be established
at Monroe after January 1, wit!
A. B. Preston as supervisor, it
was announced today.
The third district comprises
Clarke, Columbia, Eibert, Frank-'
lin, Greene, Hart, Lincoln, Madi
son, McDuffie, Morgan, Oconee, |
Oglethorpe, Richmond, Taliaferro, |
Walton, Warren, Wilkes counties. :
The actual work of taking the |
census js scheduled to begin Jan- |
vary 2, 1935. '
Willlam L. Austin, director, |
Bureau of the Census, urges alls
farmers and ranchers who have|
not received a sample copy: of thoi
schedule to procure one at thej
earliest possible moment so that |
they may give careful study to‘
the questions and be prepared to!
give full and accurate information
when the enumerator calls. Copies
may be obtained by writing to]
wour district supervisor,
" iThe schedule is divided into |
eight basic sections comprised of|'
one hundred questicns coverlngl
practically every phase of the ag
ricultural industry. Of course, ev-l
ery farmer will not have to answer‘
all of these questions, only those
pertaining to his particular lines ofl
activity. The questions will cover
the calendar year 1934. '
The enumerators will make in
quiry as to farm tenure; farml
acreage, which includes all cmp’
land, all pastura Jand and all farm ¢
woodland; the total value of the|
farm; acreage and yield of each of |
the principal fi-1d crops and vege
tables; the number of trees and
yield of the principa] fruits and
nuts; number and value of each
class of livestock; poultry and
eggs; and farm population,
Director Austin has dfclared,
that this is the most significant
farm enumeration since the incep
tion of agricultural statistics In
1840, and he earnestly requests the
cooperation of all farmers and ren
chers to the end that complete and
accurate statisties may be pro
pured and tabulated at the earliest |
possible moment. The unprece
dented destruction of crops and
livestock caused by the drought
and the many changes which have
oceurred in farms and ranches and
in the utllization of land due to the
dspression of the past few weeks
make it imperative that the farm
statistics be available as soon as
possible, if agriculture is to be as
sisted in going forward with otheri
industries, i
. The director desires to call at
tention to the Section of the Fif
{eenth Census Act, approved June
18, 1929, which makes it unlawful
for any person to refuse to answer
questions on the cehsus schedule:
“Sec, 9. That it shall be the
duty of all persons over eighteen
years of age when reauesied by the
Director of the Census, or by any
supervisor, enumerator, or special
agent, or other employe -of the
Census office, acting under the in
structions of the said director, to
answer correctly, to-the best of
their knowledge, all qustions on
th cengus schedules applying It
themselves and to the families to
which they belong or are related,
and to the farm or farms of which
they or their families are the oc
cupants; and any person over
eighteen years of age who, under
the conditions hereinbefore stated,
ghall refuse or willfully neglect to
answer any of these questions,
shall be guilty of a misdemeanor,
and upon conviction thereof shall

Gifts for the home feature ingenuity and usefulness as never before. The twin bed lamp at upper left, for instance, lights both or one bed
without glaring; linen is gayly colored and initialed, place-card holders delicately ornamental; the hors d'oeuvres tray that revolves; and
china can be monogrammed. The young lady in the picture s surrounded by suitable gifts for the home—the electric percolator and toaster,
bedside lamps, dressing table, comforters, and the bed tray with newspaper and magazine rack attached. .

NEW YORK — A little apart

“For years I've been hinting at
the family to elub together and

because they thought it was too
useful. So this time 1 just took
things into my own hands.”
A companion chair for father

one with ingenious drawers in its
overstuffed arms sos cigarettes,
ash trays and tobacco jars.
The point is that useful pres
ents, if by that you mean handy

bright new decorations for the
home, no longer need to be apolo

things start, the house has sud
denly become the pride of the en

Discovery of Serum
To Kill Cancer Cells
Found by Doctor
LONDON.—(#)—Discovery of a
serum which Kkills cancer cells
after they have been removed
from the human body, and does
no injury to healthy human tis
sue so removed, was announced
Wednesday by Dr. Thomas
Lumsden, director of the ILondon
cancer research laboratories.
Lumsden, one of the best known
among conservative cancer scien
tists, said the serum cannot be at
present used by governors of the
London hospital.
The scientist, emphasizing
strongly that the serum “is only
in the experimental stage and has
not reached the point where it
can be tried on human beings,
nevertheless said a stage had been
reached in which the serum will
kill cancer cells removed from
the human body without damage
to normal cells similarly treated.”

amusing. There is one set of two,

an under-slung balancing ball tn

bases. Milk-white glass shades,
incidentally, invisible through the
outer parchment, diffuse upward
light and also prove first aid to
ailing orbs.
A totally new wrinkle in soft
lighting is the apolescent vase
base which not only carries bulbs
in the usual place at the top, but
lights up itself and makes a won
derful ,glow for a sick room or an
entrance hall.
Other gadgets that would give

liquid that comes in a bottle and
contains not \only an aromatic
odor but more than a hint of dis

the bottoms of drinking glasses,
any size, to keep them from drip

clothes: a cigarette box with a
lid like an old-fashioned roll-top

have a concealed spring that keeps
the candle flame at a constant
height. .
