Dr. Dafoe Honored
For Job Well Done
On Quintuplet Case
Acclaim for Quintuplets’ Doctor Proves World Doesn’t Demand Great
Discoveries of Its Medical Heroes, Helen Welshimer Says
By HELEN WELSHIMER
When r. Allan R. Dafoe, the
famous country doctor from Cal
lander, Ontario, who ofliciated at
the birth of the Dionne quintu
plets, came down to New York, he
was received as joyfully as Caesar
returned to Rome from conquering
Helvetia.
Yet Dr. Dafoe himself would be
the first to say that he has accom
plished no medical feat to astound
the ages. He has brought five
babies into the world, cared for
them, converted them from curios
ities into normal, healthy, grow
ing infants. He has done an im
vortant thing, rendered a service
both Dbeneficial and interesting,
whether or not we consider it
miraculous.
There have been renowneéed men
of science with rapier brains and
facile fingers who have come to
New York city and received
merely a fraction of the acclaim
accorded the country doctor. Say
what we please about impersonal
ized service, our hearts are stir
red, and always will be stirred, by
the warmth and understanding of
the human. touch. Dr. Dafoe is
worthy of all the homage offered
him. Yet he himself is astounded
by the ovation accorded him. He
did his duty as it presented itself
in the little Canadian town where
he cast his lot—that is all, he
says. He did not try to win a

THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
place in the sun because the
world’s only living quintuplets|
were born in Callander. !
Healer Holds Imagination of AII!
The healer will always hold ans
immortal place in the human
mind. He has a quality today asi
poignant and as appealing as it
was when a Great Physiclan walk- !
ed the Eastern highways. He who l
gives dull eyes sealight and sun'
and stars, who makes ,closed ears’
hear wind and rain again, who]
sends the lame running bravely
down the highway, who patiently
cares for five small babies who are
struggling for life, will always bej
enthroned in our hearts above
those who discover planets and
continents, establish mandates,
and paint pictures. '
We are prone to ,fret because
our lots are not cast in the places
where greatness is available. We
worry because the paths of glory
do not pass our doors. Bqt Dr.
Dafoe, establishing his practice in
Callander, had no way of knowing
that the world's five most famous
babies would be born in thisl
town.
New York city has been a hap
pier, friendlier, more neighborly;
place since the country doctor
came to visit. Let scientists prat
of test tube for babies. ILet so
ciologists say what they please
about state care for the young.
They give women’s clubs and so
cial service classes something to
discuss. But as'long as the human
race remains as personal-—and it
has been that way ever since qu
first spanked Cain and Abel-—the
intimate touch will win.
He Speaks the Patient’s Language
There are such a few events in
the world which are common to
all of us. But they are the import
ant, life-making epochs. Births,
marriage, death, sacrifice and suf
fering make us one. Our roots go
deeply into the same soil.
None of us can live to himself
alone. That is why an ingenious,
likeable country doctor, who dis
penses . sympathy and good cheer
as well as pills and powders on
his medical pilgrimages, could
make the sophisticated hearts of
a great city warm and glowlng.l
He brought a story of an experi
ence which can be understood.
He talked in terms of life, talked
about babies, instead of formulas
and atoms. i
The- recent discoveries which
the world hopes will cure the can’
cer menace are most ~ important.
No one would detract from the
wealth of gratitude due the scien
tists.
But our hearts, being human,
go out instinctively and under
standingly to the country doctor
who brought five bables into the
world as part of a small town
physician’s jobh.—(Copyright, 1934,
