Mo Peace Without Spiritual : Victory E SEE many references to “/ the conditions which were prevalent in Europe when the World War began, twenty vears ago. Some feel that in them 'hey see parallels to the general situation today, and ask, Just how Sture are we? For we realize that we live in a complex society drawn closer together by modern lieans of communication, We are Lot untouched by the sorrows and fufferings around us, either as na lions or as individuals. And from this fact we learn that the well bing of one person enhances that of the community and that when 4 nation is prosperous and con tented, other nations are thereby Ulessed. So the peace of the world concerns us all. As strife between . individuals ‘eeses, will not wars ceage, for do Lot both result from the same surces, such as resentment, envy, and fear? As these thoughts are Usplaced by love, even as light Uisplaces darkness, will not peace e assured? ° Feace is not merely war’s oppo *llé, nor is it an interlude between Vars, Peace does mot result from ¢ Negative condition—from mnoth ‘£, it Is a positive state of mind, Wierein evil has no place. As the Bible says, it is not attained by ‘lving, “Peace, peace; when there 1210 peace,”” Just as we cannot be Ving without entertaining loving tWoughts, so a nation cannot be Peacetul without active, construec "¢, peacefui thinking. There can % o peace without victory over Wrong thinking. Were not the children of Israel, faltering in the wilderness, ex “Lples of the thought which de -68 peace without vietory? They "buked Moses who had started Uem on their jourmey out of bndage into freedom, out of the ‘aterial into the spiritual, saying: .5 not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone,(sthat we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than U2t we should die in the wilder- U%5.” But Moses knew that true Jace had to be earned and won, d that they would gain it by Sle forward, got backward. He 'elied on God’s _presence and pow ¥, and 5o re"“!’%gt ourage. He said that while enter ing a restaurant through a revolv ing door the blonde stepped into the door with him and a few minutes later he discovered his purse was missing. By that timg the blonde had gone. Add a tabespoonful of paraffin to the water when washing lino leum. This removes stains and helps to preserve the linoleum. Ivy on a house fall is usually a protection from dampnesd, rather than a menace, unless there is a defect in the wall. Card of Thanks (COLORED) The families of Mrs. Marjorie Brown King, Major Edward M. Brown, Washington, D. C., and Endless. Caverns, Virginia, and the family of Mrs. Rosa_ Jones Smith, express their thanks for all expresr sions of sympathy shown through out the illness and death of their devoted and faithful “mammy” and most amiable and indulgent moth er, Mrs. Annie Smith Derricotte, 389 Dußose avenue, Athens, Ga. We also trank Mack & Payne for their prompt and efficient service. Let us therefore rather “follow after the things which make for peace,” as did Christ Jesus, our Exemplar, who neither submitted to evil nor ignored it, but healed sin and disease, and - overcame death. On this point,~as on all others, Christian Science is in ac cord with the Bible, And Chris tian Scientists réalize that true peace is attained by proving error to be powerless and unreal. Mary Baker Eddy tells us in her text book, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 463), that “right and wrong, truth and error, will be at strife in the minds of students, until victory rests on the side of invincible truth.” What are sqfio of the errone ous thoughts, the overcoming of which will help the cause of peace? Is not destructive criti cism one of them? Then, ever mindful of the fact that divine Love is able and willing to guide us all, let us put our own mental house in order. As we learn that Love is the only power or force, we shall express more love, affec tion, patience, and . /gentieness. Fear and envy are also prolific sources of diseord and strife. They would whisper to us that we might lose by another's gain, that there is not enough for all. But there is no limit to good. The more good we express the more we have. The supply is ever at hand and we have but to avail ourselves of it, our real need being for more spirituality rather than more ma teriality. The consciousness. of Spirit’s ever presence lessens our faith in matter, and meets our hu man need. Lack of sympathetic understanding is another source of strife; and so misunderstand ings, different manners, customs, and points of view seem to pro mote discord, and separate us. But we can be united in spiritual understanding by holding to and %Qying the one, all-knowing nd. ieso : in all that he said and did Christ Jesus- ‘was consciously at one with Mind, God. “It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Fath er, one Life, Truth, and Love. Mankind will become. periect in proportion as this fact becomes apparent, war will cease and' the true brotherhood of man will be established” (ibid., p. 467). Then we shall have peace through spir itual victory.—The Christian Sci ence Monitor, . ... .. ...
