FIREMEN RAISE CORN
Back in the spring of this year
Firemen at Station No. 2 decidec
to plant flowers in a plot of ground
"~ on the side of the building, facing
Prince avenue.
it so happened, that right after
the ground had been thoroughly
fertilized, a rainy season began,
and for two or three weeks it was
oo wet to plant the sowers. When
it did clear off, and the would-be
gardeners decided to plant the
theé fiowers they found the
ground already occupied by other
plants—such as corn, hot pepper
and tomatoes,
Now there are five tall stalks of
corn, thal promise o make several
big ears, and many little tomatoes
and pepper plants,
There is, also a bunch of flowers
at one end of the plot of ground,
but they didn't come up without
being purposely planted, like the
vegetables.,
This fall the firemen plan to
plant roses. What's your guess as
"to what will come up?

Straining at its anchor ropes,
the giant Soviet bag, USSR-1-
Bis, is pictured above near
Moscow a few moments before
it was released and soared
aloft, carrying in a compara
tively tiny gondola its cargo of
three scientists to a height of
nearly .16 miles. Value of
scientific data obtained during
this stratosphere flight is be
lieved to exceed that secured
on all previous Soviet ascents.

Hopelessness of her struggle against tremendous odds for screen
fame drove beautiful Julia Ann Graham, above, 20-year-old former
Sistersville, W. Va., choir singer, to death by her own hand. _She was
found, shot through the head, in the home of a Hollywood cameraman,
after two previous attempts at self-destruction, in March, 1934, and
again last September, when she took poison. Then Producer Earl
Carroll helped her to a screen start, after she had said, “Had I known
what an inexperienced girl without dramatic training faced here, I
would never have left home for Hollywood. The fight is terrific—
it forced me to try death rather than carry on.” o
