SOCIAL CONDITIONS ’
ATLANTIC CITY, N. J. — ®) —«'
“Appalling social conditions” were
blamed on the forces which
“pbrought liquor back” by resolu
tions before the 61st annual con
vention of the Women'sg Chrlsuan‘
Temperance Union Thursday. i
“Moderate” use of liquor wasl
called “a fallacy and a menace” in
one resolution which held that total]
abstinence was essential in modern[
Ida_\' of mechanized speed. The ap
‘purent “utter futility of ligquor con- |
Itrol" was cited. l
I Other resolutions embodied the
' principles of the five year pro
‘gram of the national organization
lin 1939. These included education
|in the effects of alcohol; character
| building through opposition to
gambling, lotteries, indecent mov
‘r ing pictures, liquor advertiging,

SLAUGHTER VERDICT
ATLANTA — (A — 'The Geor
gia supreme court adhered to its
position Thursday that /Robert
| Slaughter, under death sentence on
a conviction of criminal assault
upon a Columbug girl, is entitled
{to a new trial.
In reiterating this position the
court upheld its former judgment
which wassset aside tentatively for
a rehearing on a motion filed re
cently by A. J. Perrvman, solicitor
general of the Chattahoochee cir
| cuit superior court.
' The justices were four and two
for a new trial. Justices R.. C.
{Bell and Richard B. Russell, sr.,
| dissented.
In its opinion, reversing the
Harris county superior court for
refusing Slaughter a new trial, the
higher tribunal held the testimony
of the girl was not sufficiently cor
| roborated by facts and evidence to
warrant the conviction. g
