been worse-for Athens that is.
The state's top-ranked AAA
team, perhaps thinking ahead to
powers R. E. Lee and Marist
the next two weeks, showed
only flashes of the power it had
used while rolling over its first
five victims this fall.

42-yard drive claimaxed by
Dave Davidson's three-yard
burst. A field goal of 23 yards-
the first, since Pete Dickens hit
one in 1960 here-came after an
intercepted pass by Billy Pres-
nell down on the Musketeer
eight. Chuck Perry did the kick-
ing.
An intercepted pass and a lost
fumble hurt Athens after the
opening kick-off, but the Tro-
jans were still rambling almost
at will, cutting gigantic holes in
the Richmond line.
It was on the third series of
downs when Athens scored first.

Hope and heartache told most
of the story among Georgia's
AAA football contenders for the
state title in the sixth week of
the high school season.
The hope came for Valdosta
and Athens as the two power.
houses rolled on their undefeat-
ed way Friday night, but Mar-
ist felt the sting of heartache as
it fell to GMA 26-0. GMA had
won only one previous game.
Valdosta took a great stride.

33-2 blasting of previously un-

Defending Class AA champion
Douglas County extended its
winning streak against hapless
Dallas of Class A. The potent
Tigers humbled Dallas 49-0.
Dublin was the site of one of
AA's top games as visiting
Dodge County and Dublin each
placed perfect 5-0 records in
jeopardy. Dublin emerged a 14-
0 winner in the battle. In an-
other important AA contest, un-
beaten Dalton sent West Fannin
to its second loss with a 40-7 vic-
tory.
Tiny Coosa provided Class
B's ranks with a moment of
pride as it played defending
Class A champion Carrollton to
a scoreless draw. The tie was
Coosa's third in a thus far un-
beaten season.
Powerfu! Fitzgerald brushed
aside Turner County of Class B
34-0 and Americus recovered
from the shock of its 0-0 tie with
Fitzgerald the previous week by
stopping Brooks County 42-0.
Americus has yet to be scored

most evenly in the second half
though Athens had good field
position almost all the time,
twice getting inside the 25. Da-
vidson got off one beautiful run
of 48 years thanks to a block by
Bill Lambert in the third peri-
od.
Midway the fourth quarter,
Athens took off from its 29 after
a punt and got down to the
Richmond two. Cash, Davidson
and Allen were the key men in
the attack.
The Musketeers rammed it
out to the five where Billy Tay-
lor punted. It went straight to
Cash at the 38 and Cash went
straight to the goal with the
help of blocks by Dick DeRose
and Zack Spratlin. Perry con-
verted with about two minutes
to go.
Richmond, which got down to
the Athens 28 once, made a real
bid to score just before the end
of the game. Taylor took the
next kick-off and zipped up the
middle for 60 yards to the Ath-1
ens 36. A penalty carried it to
the 21 and on the last play,
Richmond found itself on the
Athens 17, its furthest penetra-
tion. It got in enemy territory
only three times.
Quarterback Paul Gilbert had
his poorest night this fall, gain-
ing 14 yards rushing and ten
passing. The loss of John Spi-
vey, who suffered a separated
shoulder this week in practice
I was also felt. Athens did not run
a play from his fullback spot.
Defensively, end Mike Cas-
tronis was tremendous, Spratlin
had a good night along with tac-
kle Bill Petit and guard Randy
Parsons and Harold Clum who
played some defense. The
blocking in the offensive line,
led by Walter Granade, Bob
Poss, Clum and end Charlie Wa-
ters was sharp in the first half.
Athens gets set for three
straight home games now, a big
one coming up versus unbeaten
Lee Friday.

vidson, a 150-pounder, raced off
left tackle. Perry missed the ex-
tra point with 2:48 to go in the
first period.
Richmond, which gained but
one first down in the opening
half and only three more the

Trojans marched steadily to the

running of Allen who picked up

from their own 11 to the enemy.
