Detroit, NFL Surprise,
Gets Baltimore Testing
The Detroit Lions have sur-
prised the National Football
League this year with three
straight victories, but the test-
ing will be tougher Sunday
when they catch the Baltimore
Colts.
Baltimore has lost one game,
and the Lions under rookie.
coach Harry Gilmer, hope to
keep their unbeaten skein going.
The Minnesota Vikings and
New York Giants had a Satur-
day night game so the field at
Metropolitan Stadium could be
prepared for the sixth game of
the World Series next week be-
tween the Dodgers and the
Twins.
Cleveland and Pittsburgh also
played Saturday night.
San Francisco-Green Bay and
Detroit-Baltimore are Sunday's
big ones, pairing off the West-
ern Division's leading four
clubs. The Packers and Lions
are the NFL's only unbeaten
teams, at 3-0 while the Colts
and 49ers are 2-1.
The powerful Packers are fa-
vored solidly over San Francis-
co and the Colts are expected to
overcome the defensively strong
Lions.
Quarterback Dick Shiner, a
second-year man, will be mak-
ing the first start of his pro ca-
reer when the Redskins meet
the Cardinals. He has been giv-
en the job due to the ineffectual
play of Sonny Jurgensen.
The Eagles also will have a
reserve quarterback, King Hill,
in action against the Cowboys.
First-stringer Norm Snead is
out with an injured knee.
The Bears are at home for the
first time this season, after
dropping three in a row on the
road. One of them was to the
Rams two weeks ago, by a 30-28
score. Chicago is favored to
even matters Sunday.
Oakland end Art Powell,
a widely traveled nine-year
го at the age of 28, is
proving to American Football
League rivals that he deserves
a little more respect.
Powell, who combines a solid
212 pounds with a track sprint-
er's speed, wrecked Boston de-
fenses by grabbing 11 passes,
including two for touchdowns,
Friday night as the Raiders
handed the hapless Patriots
their fifth straight defeat, 24-10.
Two other AFL games are
scheduled for Sunday, with San
Diego at Buffalo, and Kansas
City at Denver. New York and
Houston are idle.
The key game is the meeting
between undefeated Buffalo, 4-0,
and the Chargers, 3-1. The Bills
rule a slight favorite despite the
loss of ends Elbert Dubenion
and Glenn Bass. San Diego will
be bolstered by the return of
fullback Keith Lincoln, who
missed the Chargers' first four
games with a thigh injury.

To Be Back

Butts, long time University of
Georgia football boss who was
once reputed as the most knowl-
edgeable passing mentor in the
game?
Now a car salesman here, the
stubby ex-coach is still awaiting
final appeals in his libel suit
against a magazine for publish-
ing an article which accused
him of collaborating against the
best interests of his institution's
football team.
Butts won $3 million in judg-
ment in the original trial but
the figure was later reduced to
$460,000 on appeals. The legal
manipulations are still not
ironed out.
Butts misses the game he has
been absent from for three
years.
"You can't," he says, "shake
the nostalgia very easily."
