Tigers Return, Whip Madison
DANIELSVILLE, Ga. -Com-
merce was behind for the first
time this season, but recovered
in the second half to win over
Madison County here Friday
night and to continue its perfect
season.
Commerce head coach Jeff
Davis said that Madison beat
them in the first half, but "Our
boys came back in the second
half and made us proud of
them."
Davis added "Madison Co. is
the best team we've played this
year We were a little flat,
but I hope that i was just an off
night," he continued.
Madison took the lead for the
whole first half when Cauthern
Westbrook passed to Wayne
Craig for 15 yards and the
touchdown. Westbrook kicked
the PAT
In the second period Com-
merce bounced back in the sec-
ond quarter as Tim Miller ran
to paydirt from six yards out,
but the PAT attempt was
missed. The half ended with
Madison Co. leading 7-6.
In the third quarter Com-
merce came back ready to play
some tough football. Lewis San-
ders picked up a Madison fum-
ble on the opening kickoff of the
second half and ran five yards
for the TD. Max Carnes kicked
the PAT making the score 13-7
with Commerce taking the lead.
Carnes raced 40 yards early
in the fourth period for the final
Commerce touchdown of the
game and then kicked the extra
point making the score 20-7.
The final score in the game
was made by Jerry Self on a
four yard lunge for Madison
making the final score 20-14.
Commerce Coach Davis had
high praises for a few Tiger
linemen. Tackle Robert Oliver,
end Mike Archer, and lineback-
er Darell Cochran were all
mentioned for their fine defen-
sive play.
Commerce's won-loss record
for the year is 6-0.

Devils Make It 4
LINCOLNTON, Ga. Red
Devil quarterback Sammy
Evans picked up his fourth and
fifth touchdowns of the year to
lead Lincolnton to its fourth vic-
tory of the season over Greene
County here Friday night.
Evans scored the first touch-
down of the game in the second
quarter when he dove over from
three yards out. He accounted
for his second and his team's
second touchdown in the same
period when he took a Tommy
Drinkard pass and raced 36
yards for the touchdown..
The only third quarter score
came on a Gartrell Blackmon
sprint from 10 yards out to pay-
dirt.
Robert Steed started things
off in the fourth quarter when
he intercepted a Greensboro
pass and returned it 50 yards
for the score. Drinkard passed
32 yards to Allen Danner for the
final touchdown of the game
making the score 35-0.
Robert Williams kicked all
five PATS for the Red Devils.

HARTWELL. Ga.
taking a 13-0 lead over Washing-
ton-Wilkes here Friday night,
Hart County was unable to hold
on and lost. 18-13 to the class B
school.
Hartwell scored first in the
second quarter on a 20-yard
pass from Lyle Martin to Mel-
vin Osley for the touchdown.
Later, in the third period Mar-
tin kept the ball and dove over
from one yard out for the sec-
ond Hartwell score. Harvey
Vollrath made the PAT at-
tempt.
Towards the end of the third
quarter Jerry Bowman ran 12
yards for a touchdown to start
things off for Washington.
Washington's second touch-
down was set up when they re-
covered a Hart fumble on the
Bulldogs' own 12. From there
Bowman scored again, but the
PAT was missed leaving Hart-
well leading 13-12.
With less than three minutes
left in the game, Poss tossed to
Calloway who ran 80 yards for
the deciding score.

biggest upsets in area football
happened here Friday night as
Jefferson surprised everybody

Habersham ruined Franklin
County's homecoming Friday
night by slaughtering its hosts,
25-7.
Habersham got things moving
in the first period when David
Nichols dashed over from four
yards out for the score. Ricky
Williams ran the PAT.
Ricky Creuce hit Carmen Al-
len with a nine-yard pass in the
second quarter and threw to
David Nichols good for 22 yards
and the third score, right after
the half.
Williams picked up North Ha-
bersham's final tally in the
third quarter on a five yard
plunge.
Franklin scored in the fourth
quarter, when Ted Wilson took
the ball over from the one yard
line for six points.
Grant McGarity kicked the
PAT.

tral Gwinnett's one yard line
but was unable to get another
play off before the final whis-
tle blew. The game ended with
the score, Gwinnett 14, Monroe
13.
Monroe scored first after a 62
yard drive in the opening min-
utes of the game when quarter-
back Jimmy Bolton passed five
yards to David Hood in the end
zone, but the important PAT
was missed.
In the second quarter, Central
marched back down the field to
scoring position on the five, and
from thre fleet Thomas Harris
took it on in for the touchdown.
Bill Wages kicked the extra
point.
In the final period Paden
passed to Harris for Central's
final tally. Wages hit on the
PAT again.
Late in the game, Monroe
marched 59 yards to the one
yard line from where Harris
ran to paydirt. Monroe made
the PAT, but was unable to
score again.

But, here again, the Clemson folk were not about to be.
outdone. A Tiger named Duley but pronounced "Dooley"
ground out important yardage for the Tigers.
The game had a slow finish-and the average fellow
would have vowed there was something wrong with the clock.
In less than 10 seconds, Etter kicked a field goal-placing his
"Dogs out front-23-9. Georgia kicked off to Clemson and the
officials ruled it illegal because it didn't travel far enough,
and a 29-yard Clemson pass was ruled complete by virtue of a
Georgia penalty. Another incomplete pass by the Tigers ended
the contest and the coaches-Howard in his blue shirt and
Dooley his white one dripping with perspiration-met at mid-
field to shake hands and allow as to ho wthey had enjoyed it.
But the day was not about to be over. Gala Homecoming
dances, fraternity activities, and chapel-bell ringing were still
to be.
It was a different story for the South Carolinians. The trip.
back to Tiger-town was much akin Saturday night to their
experience in Atlanta a week ago.
The road home seemed a lot longer.
