It is no surprise to the thought
ful man who takes everything in
to consideration that a great tidal
wave of evil and deviltry of all
kinds is epidemic in this country.
Let an atrocious murder, as foul
and black as can be, be committed.
At once it is flashed over the
country, and every daily paper
runs it top column on first page

The daring murderer, robber or

State School Commissioner
Brad well i® making preparations
for taking the school census for
Georgia.
It will be remembered that the
state board of education at its last
meeting ordered a census of the
school children of the state to be
taken.
The enumerators who arc to do
this work will be selected by' the
county u»l city boards of educa
tion.
Next week Commissioner Brad-
well will issue a circular asking
the city and county boards
throughout the state to meet on
the first Tuesday in March and
select the enumerator.
These enumerators will be paid
two dollars a day, and they will he
engaged about two months on the
work, for Commissioner Bradwcl!
will only allow that much time to
be occupied.
It will be their duty to go from
house to house and ascertain how
aianv children there are in each
between the ages of six and eigh
teen years, the race and sex, weath
er or not they attend school, wheth
er or not they can read and write
and how many children there are
blind or deaf and dumb.
When the enumerators have
gone over th? territory assigned to
them they will report to the county
school commissioner of the county,
and he will compile the figures for
the whole county* and send them to
Commissioner Bradweil, who will
compile them for the state and pub
lish them.
‘•There are several important
results that I expect to come from
tho taking of this census,” said
Commissioner Bradweil this morn
ing. “One of the most important
will be, if I am not mistaken, that
the slur of Georgia as being the
most illiterate state in the union
will be lifted from her. I don't
believe this is true, and I
believe the taking.of the coming
census will demonstrate the falsity
or that charge beyond the shadow
of it doubt. “Another important
friends. ( result will be the u or.* equitable
and just distribution of the school
money approprited by the state.
The law says this money must
be distributed "on the basis of
school population-. V.*e have
accordingly been giving it out on

from a narrow to a broadguage

j Col. Hawkins was ampitious. He
tried to gain control of the At
lanta and Florida road, when that
road got into trouble. Failing in
this, he decided to build on to
Montgomery.
