SCARCITY OF LABOR.
Hhera is old-time hustling for la-
w.r going on in the sunny south
jj-ust now, and if you are obliged
'to hire hands you will havo to hus
tle if you get them. The recent
dry weather has opened cotton so
fast that all the hands in the state
cannot keep up with it. Common
laborers who usually make 75 cents
-a clay are getting twice that now, or
they will quit you and go to the cot
ton patch. Tho washerwomen are
gone, the servants are gone, all
hands and the oooK arc gone to tho
cotton patch, and you can't ger, your
mind changed without changing it
yourself. A report from Macon
says no less than 100-farmers were
in Macon Sunday hunting cotton-
pickers. They came from all di
rections, and some from a hundred
miles away. Half a dozen wagons
were at the livery stables Sunday
night in Macon to carry hands to
the country, aud one man said be
had foriy bales open. In Vienna
the wagons are here before day
every morning for the hands, and
they are brough back every night.
A man may sit on a sulky plow and
cultivate a cotton crop, but he will
never sit there and pick u.
