D^Ti ,I! Cotton Factory.—la another
column of this paper will be found the pro
ceedings of a meeting, held iu this place on
Saturday evening last, by the citizens, to
inaugurate initiatory steps in building a
Cotton Factory in or near Cartersvillo, at
an early day. The meeting was a harmoni
ous one, and enlisted tho enthusiasm of all
I resent. As to the utility of the movement
none questioned it, and it is needless for us
to urge its necessity through the columns of
he press. All want it, and all that is nec
essary to be done to secure it is the deter
mination, on the part of the people, to have
it. “The people” can do wonders when they
,<et Ilnur heads together in good earnest.—
“Where there is a will there is a way,” has
been demonstrated too often, in the past, to
admit of a doubt at tho present; and we are
very much inclined to the opinion that, tho’
our people may be divided about some things
touching the prosperity of our town, they
are, to a man, united on the Cotton Factory
movement, and have it they will, or we arc
very mu< * lecrive l : n them, All over tho
State aud South we Lear of Orphan Homes
und Aauylums for the Poor being established,
not only by counties hut. by religious denom
fu tih.ne, for the pre'-otion of that class of
unfortunates in our midst who have suffer
ed, and avo still euTering, for the necessa
ries of life, at great cost and labour; all of
which is highly commendable and exempli
fies the magnanimity of a great and humane
people; but, at the same time, it saw very
far short of m eeting the wants of this class
of our population in that direction. In the
Orphans’ Home as well as In the As;ydum
for the Id.or, they art . adtered, fed, cloth
ed, and educated—educated in what, and for
what ? * They grow up to adult ago without
knowing how to work or (lie access ty for
it. Would it not be far bet 'or for them and
the count. /, i-i addition, to erect. Factories,
nud set on foot other industrial enterprises,
where their labors can be made to support
and educate them, and, at the same time,
developc the resources of the country by
building up large manufacturing interests
ail over the land, besides learning them a
trade that will secure for them a livlihood
for all time to come, they will grow up with
industriou . habits, and while they learn to
read the Bible, they will also ienrn the edict
in it addl es ed to man that “in the sweat of
his face shall he cat bread.” The Orphans’
Home and the Assylum for the Poor are im
portant steps in the right direction, they
propose to take enre of the very young and
the aged and infirm, while the Manufactur
ing establishments will afford them ample
opportunity to learn a trade; aud, besides,
there are scores of youths in the land, who
are not orphans, and who would jump at an
offer to learn a trade and secure employ
ment in an honorable avocation. Every
Cotton Factory, Ac., properly conducted,
will effectually feed, clothe and educate from
twenty-five to fivo hundred otherwise de
pendents, stop the wail of helpless or
phanage and destitute widowhood, scat
ter flowers along the thorny mazes of life,
diffuses knowledge in the ranks of ignorant
dependents, inspire hope, beget cheer
fulness and smiles, wipe away the tears of
woe and despond from many emaciated
cheeks, and encompass the entire commu
nity with the sun-light, of prosperity. W c
can but faintly sketch, in a newspaper ar
ticle, only an idea of tho benefits to be de
rived from these manufacturing enterprises
by individuals and communities where they
are located.
The next important movement to manu
factories are railroad enterprises, both alike
arc great sources of wealth and convenience
to a community and country, and without
which there cannot be much material pros
perity. The former enterprises necessarily
demand the latter, the one is the feeder of
the other, and both are the feeders of the
people. Show us a section of country che
quered by railroads and dotted with manu
facturing establishments, and we will show
you a great country and an enterprising
population, far in advance of the balance of
the world in all the elements which consti
tute true greatness, morally, mentally, and
physically. Show us an enterprising peo
l le, and we will guarantee that they are al
so magnanimous and benevolent. What we
most in Cartersville is manufactories,
to give our people employment, and rail
roads as carriers to bring i n raw material
and carry out the products of our manufac
turing establishments to tho mercantile
world. We have railroad facilities to and
from three of the four points of the compass
—North, South, aud West; we must, have,
at. least, one more, from the East, so as to
embrace all the points. In another column
will be found the proceedings of a meeting
receutly held in Crnton, Ga., looking to
the construction of a railroad from this point
10 ilabun Gap via Canton, and known and
'languished as the Atlanta and Blue Ilidge
• ■-.dread, to which wo invite the attention
“f our readers.

On last night a burglar entered the dwell
ing house of Mr. Lindsey Payne, of this
place, stole hid watch and pocket-book, and
key to his store, from the room in which he
was sleeping. From thence, they proceed
ed to his store, and having the key, had but
to unlock the door aud walk in. They took
what money had been left in the drawer
the evening before, besides various articles of
merchandise. Mr. Payne, as yet, is unable
to form a correct estimate cf his loss. No
clue, up to this writing, to the thief or
thieves.
We deeply regret to learn that young

since, by the falling of the bridge over Eu

Wn are all “right side up with care,”
in our new quarters, after two or three
day’s of harder work than we like to do;
we have a perfect aversion to portable
printing offices, and are going to do our
best to get up a stationary one, and apply
for a patent; however, notwithstanding the
trouble, work, “pi” and wry faces of our
“devils,” we think that wo are fully repaid
by the exchange, as our new office is, in
every respect, the best adapted to the busi
ness of any we ever saw, and we are willing
to take a life-time lien on it.
The meeting, on Saturday last, for the
purpose of taking the iniatory steps towards
building a Cotton Factory in Cartersville,
was attended by large majority of our most
enterprising, influential and monied men,
all of whom, wo are proud to know, signi
fied their approval of, and willingness to aid
in getting on foot, this great enterprise,
which, in their judgment, will prove of
great benefit to our young and vigorou3
town. We think it one of tho best enter
prises in which to invest capital, in our
knowledge, and would earnestly enjoin up
on all of our citizens tho importance of tak
ing stock iu it, be it ever so little, and we
believe they will do it. and without hesita
tion. As our citizens are wholly and fully
convinced that wc ought to build this Fac
tory, and have gone to work to accomplish
it, and are aware of the advantages which
would accrue therefrom, wo would
deem .t a superfluous use of words, to
say more about it at this time. We must
and will build it, and that soon. We pub
lish the proceedings of the meeting, held at
the Town Hall, at the time above specified,
in this issue, to which wo invite attention.
Coin in this section is fairly running
away with itself, and we are told by farm
ers that they i>ev,r saw if prow faster than
it has in the last week, in their lives. Cot
ton has been almost entirely ruined by the
wet weather. Wheat will not turn out half
a crop.
Wk have found out why our citizens did
not take any interest in that Broom Factory
which we “had on the brain” so badly, a
short time since—it was too small a thing,
and since we come to think of it, it looks
very much that way to us; but it will be
remembered that local items were very
scarce about that time.
——
See the advertisement of Sparks & Heath,
in this paper; they say what they mean
and mean what they say, and among other
things, they say that they work none but
good stock, do good work, ns cheap work,
and more of it than anybody in town, and
their motto, in regard to price3 is, “live
and let live.” Give them a trial, is all they
ask.
All who have the welfare of Cartersville
at heart, are expected to attend the Railroad
meeting at the Court House, on Tuesday
next, at II o’eloc.., a. m. Os course there
will be a largo crowd present.
Tiib pic-nic on the 9th instant, is looked
forward to with anticipations of a pleasant
and joyous time, by both old and young. .
We are having more rainy weather—
ruinous on “biscuit bread,” but glorious on
young fowls of the webb-foot persuasion !
Our town was honored, a day or two ago,
by a very poor specimen of mankind, who
said that he was the most intelligent man
in this country ; he said that he was a phre
nologist, philosopher, astronomer, theolo
gian, poet and orator, and had traveled the
wide world o’er ; had lectured in New York
City, and a thousand other big tales, with
no more truth in them than these; he was
possessed of the power of übiquity—was
born in three or four different Slates, and
had performed many superhuman miracles.
While he was haranguing a crowd on
Tuesday night last, we heard one fellow
remark, “turpentine,” another articulate
“tar,” another ejaculate “feathers,” aud
another modestly suggest a “rail;” and
from what we could gather from these dis
connected and broken sentences, we came
to the conclusion that the “hoys” had an
idea of giving him free transportation out of
town. He was like the Irishman’s dog—
“entirely too smart.”
*eTA few weeks since the mortal re
mains of Mr3. Satterfield, wife of Mr. Wm.
Satterfield, of this place, was consigned to
the grave, in the town cemetery. Hard by
her side, on Thursday last, was laid her in
fant babe. There mother and child are to
await their summons to the skies, on the
final day.
Distant, about fifty yards, from these, in
the last four days, have been consigned to
the tomb, another mother and her infant
babe—Mrs. Pritchett, wife of Col. J. Welter
Pritchett, also of this place. Truly “In the
midst of life we are in death.”

j and requested her children and
friends and kindred, to meet her iu that
bright world above, wjhcre death could part

a true Christian alone can die, and has gone
to dwell with that God who made her and re

soiatiou to know taut when our loved ones
are summoned by death away, that they go

Wo deeply rpmpathise with the grief
sir loken hn ’baud, liiile children and discon

would seem alrm.vt like mockery; however,
they should greatly rejoice to know that,
to-day, he uan angel in Heaven, and in
compliance with her dying request, strive
to meet her there.
Her funeral was preached on yesterday,
at the Baptist Hhurch, in this place, by
R. 11. Ileadeu, pastor, after which her re

beside her little child.
“There i a world above,
Where |i.u ting is unknown;

Formed for the good alone;
And faith beholds the dying here
Translated to that glorious sphere.

Orators aud Newspapers.
Compare Lho orator, one of tlio no
blest vehicles for tho diflnsion of
thought, with the newspaper, aud wo
may gain a faint glimpse of tho übi
quitous powor of the latter. Tho ora
tor speaks to a few hundreds, the
newspaper addresses millions. The
words of the orator may uie in the air,
the language of the newspaper is
stamped on tables imperishable as
marble. The arguments of the orator
may follow each other so rapidly that
a majority of tho audience may strug
gle in a net of ratiocination—the rea
soning of the newspaper may be
scanned at leisure without a fear of
perplexity. Tho passion of tho orator
influences an assembly, the feeling of
a newspaper elect rifles a cou linen t.—
The orator is for an edifice, the news
paper for the world, the one shines for
an hour, the other glows for all time;
the orator may be compared to light
ning, which flashes’ over a valley for a
moment, but it leaves it again in dark
ness; tho newspaper to a sun blazing
steadily over the whole earth, and
“fixed on the basis of its own eternity.”
Printing has been happily defined “the
art which preserves all arts.” Printing
makes the orator more than an orator.
It catches up bis dying words, and
breathes into them the breath of life.
It is the speaking gallery through
which the orator thunders in the ears
of ages. He leans from the tomb over
the cradle of rising generations.

taste,called “Tonics,” “Appetizers,” “Restorers,"ic..,
that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are
a true Medicine, auulc from the Native Boots and Herb*
of California, freo from a!I Alcoholic Stimu
lants. They are the GREAT BLOOD PURI
FIER and A LIFE GIVING PRINCIPLE,
a perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the System,
carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring theblocd
to a healthy condition. Ko person can tako these Bit
ters according to directions and remain long unwell,
provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral
poison or other means, and tho vit.d organs wasted
beyond tho point of repair.
They arc a Gentle Purgatlvotss well ua a
Tonic, possessing, also, the peculiar nieyt or acting
as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or Inflam
mation of the Liver, and all the Visceral Organs.
FOR FEMALE COMPLAINTS, in young or
old, married or single, at tho dawn of womanhood or at
the turn of life, theso Tonic Bitters have no equal.
For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheuma
tism and Gout, Dyspepsia or ludigoation,
Bilious, Reiuitteut oud luterniltieut Fe
vers, Diseases of ilie Blood, Liver, Kid
neys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most
successful. Hueh Diseases are cansedjjy Vit luted
Blood, which is generally produced by derangement
of the Digestive Organs.
DYSPEPSIA OR INDIGESTION, Head
ache, Pain in tho Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the
Chest, Diiziuess, Sour Eructations of the Stomach.
Bad Taste In tlio Mouth, Bilious Attacks, Palpitation of
the Heart, Inflammation of tho Lungs, Pain in the re
gions of tho Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symp
toms, are tho offsprings of Dyspepsia.
They invigorate tho Stomach and stimulate the torpid
Liver and Bowels, which render thorn of unequalled
efficacy in cleansing the Hood of all impurities, and im
parting now life and vigor to the whole system.
FOR SKIN DISEASES, Eruptions,Tetter, Salt
Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Bolls, Car
buncles. King-Worms. Scald Head, Sore Eyes, Erysipe
las. Itch. Scurfs, Discoloration* of the Skin. Humors and
Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are
literally dug up and carried out of the system in a short
time by the uao of theso Bitters. One bottle in such
eases will convince the moat incredulous of their cura
tive effects.
Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find its im
purities bursting through the akin in Pitnplea, Erup
tions or Sores ; cleanse it when you find it obstructed
and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is foul,
and your feelings will toll you when. Keep the blood
pure, and tho health of the srstem will follow.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurking in the
system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed
and removed. Says a distinguished physiologist,
there Is scarcely au ind ! vidual upon the face of the
earth whose body is exempt from the presence of
worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the
hotly that worms exist, but upon tho diseased humors
and slimy deposits that breed those living monsters of
disease. No System of Medicine, no vermifuges, no
anthelmintics will free the system from worms like
tuese Bitters.

Grover and.Ba&er Sewing Machine
mills celebrated Scwdng Machine has been ia‘-
jp use for nearly twenty years, and is now us
ed by ovw three hundred thousand families,
and lias gained a reputation far above any oth
er sewing Machine. It Las been aw arded more
national prizes than any other machine in the
world; at the Great World’s Fair at New York,
it was awarded the Gold Medal; at the Loudon
Fair it won the very highest prize, and in 1867,
at Fans, it was awarded the cross of the Legion
of Honor; besides this, it has won the 1 irst
Premium at all the State Fairswhere.it ha*
been exhibited. However, we do not claim that
premiums won at onr State and County Fairs
any great honor or mark of distinction, as it
depends more on the operator than the machine,
they seldom have judges who are mechanics,
and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National
Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who ars
judges of machinery. The following are some
of the reasons why the Grover & Raker is the
best: * ..
It is the lightest running Machine in use, It is
the simplest; it is more rapid in its movements;,
sews directlv trom two spools without rewind
ing; sew s all kinds of work without baisting,
can do twice as much work in a dav as any
other machine; it is the most durable, and
almost noiseless; it sews equally well on all
kinds of goods, from the llnest Swiss muslin to
the heaviest Reaver cloth; makes the elastic
lock-stitch much the strongest in use, and every
machine is fully warranted. Who can desire
any more in a sewing machine. There is every
variety and size of theso machines, lrom the
lightest family to the heaviest leather machine.
These machines are now for sale at Cartersviile,
Ga., bvLeon A CAMP, in one of .Judge Parrott-s
