Having for the last thirty-live years devoted j
my whole time and attention to the study of]
lung diseases ami consumption. I had that 1 un- ,
<twr>laud fully the course that ought t<» be pur
red td* restore a tolerable had ease of
lungs to healtliv soundness. The first and most
important -denis for the patient to avoid taking
cold, and the best of all places on this continent
for this purpose in winter, is Florida,.well down
iu the slate, where the tei’ipctaynt e is,
and not -nhient t-» sm !i var aliens as fti iilur
Northern latitudes. J’alatka i- anoint I can re
commend. A (jo. and hotel is kejJt there by Petef
man. East winter 1 saw several per. oTs iiicie
Whose lungs hud been foully diseased. but w h*>,
under the healing iniinence of the dinnAe and
my medicines, were getting well.
One hundred miles further down the river is a
point wdiich 1 would prefer to I’ulatka. as tin
temperature is more even and the air dry and

t. t there. I should give a decide 1 pivierciu eto

and it seems almost impossible to take cold there.
The tables in Honda might n< neater, and pa
tients ronrdafri at times ntif that i.- agood sign,

And then the tuners must h'**tl. ' '• • --
Jacks mi ville, 11 ibernia, Green < 'ove, and many
or her place- in various part -of Florida, ran, be
safety recommended to consumptives in winter.
\lv reasons for saying so are that patients are
less- liable to take cold there than whore there is
a less even temperature, and it is not necessary
to say that where a consumptive person exposes
hruisedft) frequent cold- he is certain to die
shortly. ,Therefore my advice i-, go well down
into the Stale but iff reach at the prevailing east
winds and fogs. Jacksonville, or almost any
oUuuyif th.; localities I have named, -a ill benefit
those who arc troubled with a torpid livSr.bl dis
ordered stomach, deranged bowels, sore throat
or cough, but for those whose lungs ave.di-e.'teed
a iu mi southern point is earnestly recommend
ed.
For fifteen years prior to lSfig, F was profes
sionally in New York, Boston, Baltimore- and
Philadelphia over) week, where I saw and ex
amined on an av.-rage tive hundred patients a
week. A praet ice s<» extensive, embracing ev
ery possible phase of lung disease, has enabled
me to understand the disease fully, and
hence, m.v Caution in regard to taking < old. A
person may take vast (plantities of “*chelicfcV
I’ulnVmie Svrup, Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake
Pills,” and yet die If he does not avoid taking
cold.
In Florida, nearly every body is using
■Schenok’s Mandrake Hills, for the climate is
more likely to produce billions habit- than store
northern latitudes. It is a well established fact
that unlive- of Florida rarely die .of consump
tion, especially those of the southern part. On
the other hand, in New England, one third, at
least, ol‘ the pointLntKm die‘of this terrible dis
ease. In the Middle states ft does not prevail
so largely, si ill there are many thousands oT ca
ses there! What a vast percentage of life woud
be saved if consumuLives were a» easily alarm
ed in regard to taking fresh cold as they are
about .scarlet fever, small pox, At-, Bui they
are not. They take what they term a little cold,
which they are credulous enough to believe will
vr ear olf in a tew days. They pay no attention
to it, and hence it lays the foun tatfoH for anoth
er and another still, until the lungs are diseased
beyondrj.il hope lor-cure.
Sly advice to persons whose lungs are affected;
even slightly is, to lay in a stock of Scheftek’s
Pulmonic rtvrup, Schenck’s Seaweed Tonic and
Schenek’s Mandrake Hills and go to Florida. I
recommend these particular medicines hecuue 1
am thoroughly acquainted \v,th their action. 1
know that where they are used in strict accord
ance with mv dutaJaun* thev will da tlie work
that is required. This .areompli-lied, nature will
do the rest. The physician who prescribes for
cold, cough or night-sweats, and then advises
the patient to walk or ride out evert' day, will
be sure to have a corpse on his hands before long.
My plan is to give my three medieincs’ in ac
cordance with the printed directions, exccut in
some eases where a freer use of ;iie Mandrake
J’ills is-necessary, My object is to give tone to
the stomach—to tret up a good appetite. It is al
ways a good sign when a patient begins to grow
hungry. I have hopes ol such. With a jell'sh
f.-r food and the gratification of that relislrcomes
ET#' A l-.tomK and with it more flesh, which iscwse
ly followed by a healing of the lungs. Then Hu*
cough loosens and abates, the creeping chills
and clammy night-sweats no longer prostrate
hh*l annoy, and Ihe patient gets well, provided
_»e avoids'taking cold.
Now there are many consumptive who have
net the means to go to Florida. The question
nta*' lie asked, is there no hone for such? Cer
tainly there is. My adviec to such is, and ever
has been, to stay in a warm room during winter,
with a temperature of about seventy degrtys,
which should be kept regularly at that point,
by means of a thermometer. Let such a patient
take his exercise within tire limits of the room
by walking up and down as much as his strength
will permit, in order to keep up a healthy circu
lation of the blood. I have cured thousands Ijy
this system, and can do so again. Consumption
is as easily cured as-any other disease if if is ta
ken in time, and the proper kind of treatment is
pursued. Thfe fact stands undisputed on record
that Schenck’s PulmonieSyi up, Mandrake Pills,
end Seaweed Tonic have cured very many of
•chat seemed so be hopeless cases of consump
tion. Go where you will, you M ill be almost cer
tain to tiud tome poor consumptive" who has been
rescured from the very jaws of death by their
use.
so far as the Mandrake Pills are concerned,
every hoky should keep a supply of them gtn hand.
They act on the liver better than calomel, and
leave none of its hurtful effects behind. In fact
thev are excellent in all cases where a purgative
medicine is required. If you ha ve partaken too
freely of fruit and diarrhoea ensues, a dose ot Hie
Maim rakes will cure you. If yon are subject to
sick headache, take a dose of the Mandrakes
and they M ill relieve you in two hours. ,ls you
would obviate the-eftVcf of a change of w ater, or
the oo free indulgence in fruit, take oqe of the
Mandrakes everv night or eyery other wight, and
von may then "di-ink water and eat M .iteimcl
lous. pears," apples, plums, peeches or corn, witli
out the risk of being made sick by them. They
will protect those who live in damp situations
against chills and fevers. Try them. They are
perfectly harmless. They can do you good only.
1 have abandoned my professional visits to-
Boston and New York, but continue to see pa
tients at my office, No. 15 N. SIXTH street, Phil-,
add phi a. e very Sat urday, from 1> A. M. to 2 I*. M.
Those who M’fsh a thorough examination with
the Uespirometer u ill bo charged live dollars.—
Tin* Uespirometar declares the exact condition
of the lungs, and patients can readily learn
whether they are curable or not. But I desire it
distinctly understood that the medicines de
pends upon their being taken strictly according
to directions.
In .conclusion, r will say that when persons
take my medicines and their systems are
brought into a healthy condition thereby, they
an* i»Qt so liable to rukt* col l, yet no ohe u ith
diseased lungs can boar a sudden change, of at
mo-phcre*wi thout (lit i iability of greater or less
irritation of the bronchial tube'!.
Full directions in all languages accompany
my medicines, so explicit and cleurthat any one
can use them without consulting 'me, anil can
be bought from aid druggist.

6 BA*> BLOOD.’
“THE LIFE IS~ THE BLOOD*”
From it we derive our strength, beauty,
and mental capabilities. It is the centre of
our being, around which revolves all that
makes existence happy. When this source
is corrupted the painful effects are visible
in many shapes, prominent among which is
SCROFULA.
This is a taint or infection of the human
organism, and probably no one is wholly
free from it. It exhibits itself in various
shapes—as Ulcers and Sores, Decay ed Bones,
Diseased Scalp, Sore Eyes, Weak and Diseas
ed Joints, St. Vitus’ Dance, Foul Discharg
es from the Nostrils, Eruptions, Glandular
Swelling*, Throat Affections, Rheumatism,
Heart Affections, Nervous Disorders, Bar
renness, Disorders of the Womb, Dropsy,
Sypliillitic Affections, Liver Complaint, Salt
Rheum, Dyspepsia, Neuralgia, Loss of Man
hood and General Debility.
It has been the custom to treat these dis
eases with Mercury and other Mineral sub
stances, which, though sometimes producing
a cure, often prove injurious and entails
misery in after life. The long known inju
rious properties of these so-called alteratives
and purifiers has led the philanthropical
man of science to explore the arena of
tore, the result of which hasXeen the discov
ery of vegetable products which possess the
j power of eradicating these Taints from the

Harper’s Bazar contains, besides pictures,
patterns, etc., a variety of matter of especial use
and interest to th 6 family; articles oil health,
dress, and housekeeping in all its branches; its
editorial matter is specially adapted to the cir
cle it is intended to interest and instruct; and it
has. besides, good stories and literary matter of
merit. It is not suprising thejournal. with such
features, has achieved in a short time an im
mense success; for somethingof its kind was de
sired in thousands of families, and its publishers
have filled the demand. The young lady who
buys a single number of Ilarpeii’s Bazar is made
a subscriber for life. — N. Y. Evening Post.
Tlie Bazar ts excellent. Like all tin* period
icals which the Harper’s publish, it is almost
ideally well edited, and the class of readers for
whom it is intended—the mothers and daughters
in average families—cannot but profit by its
good sense and goo<( taste, which, we have no
doubt, are to-rfav making very many homes
happier than they may have been before the
women began ticking lessons in personal and
household and social management from this
good-natured mentor. —The hation, X. Y.
