FOR THE CURE OF AGUE AND FEVER OR CHILLS AND FEVER. The proprietor of this celebrated medicine jas’l, claims for it a superiority over all remedies ever offer ed to the pu die tor the safe, certain, speedy andper manent cure of Aru- and Fever .or Chilis and Fever whether of shorter longstanding, lie refers to the entire Western and Southwestern country to bear him testimony to the truth of the assertion, that in no case whatever will it fail to cure, if the directions are strict ly followed and ca ried out. In a great many cases a single dose has oeen sufficient for a cure, and whole families have teen cured by a single bottle, with a per fect restoration of the general health. It is, however, prudent, and in every case more certain to cure, if its use is continued in smaller doses for a week or two af ter the disease has been checked, more especially in difficult and long standing cases. Usually, this metis cine will not require a'.y aid to keep the bowels in good order; should the patient, however, require a cathartic medicine, after having ttken three or four doses of the Tonic, a single dose of BCLL’H VEGETA BLE FAM’LY PII.ES will be sufficient. To my United States and World wide Read ers: I II At E received many testimonials from profes s onal and medical men, as ray almanacs and vari ous publications have shown, all of which are genuine. Ihe following from a highly educated and popular phpdcian in Georgia, is certainly one of the most sen sible couimunicationf I have ever received. Rear whatthe Doctor says of Bulls Worm Destr. yer Villanow, Walker co., Ga. ) June 29th, JBG6 £ I)R. JOHN DULL—Dear Sir;—l have recently giv en your “Worm Destroyer” several trial., and find it wonderfully efficacious. It has not failed in a single instance, to have the wished-for effect, lain doing a pretty large country practice, and have daily use for some article of the kind. lam free to confess that I know of no remedy recommended by theablest authors that is so certain and speedy in Us effects, un the con trary they are uncertain in me extreme. My object in writing you is to find out upon what terms I can get the medicine directly from you. If I can get it upon easy terms, I shall use a great deal of it. lam aware that the use of such articles is contrary to the teachings and practice of a great majority of the reg ular hue oi M. D.’s, but I see no just cause or good sense in discarding a remedy which we know to be el ficient, simply oecause we may be ignorant of its com bination. For my part, I shall make it a rule to use all and any means to alleviate suffering hum.nity which I may be able to oinmand—not hesitating because someone more ingenious than myself may have learn d its effects first, and secured the sole right tc secure hat knowledge. However, lamby no mi ans an ad vocate or supporter of the thousands of worthless nos trums that flood the country, that purport to cure all manner of disease to which hum.n flesh is heir— Please reply soon, and inform me of your best terms I am,sir, most respectfully, JULIUS P. WAITEHALL STREET, ATLANTA, GA '«620, lßQ9ufly < ARTKKHVILLE, RAIITOW COIIXTT, «E0R(21.1, JlLl 1870. “RAISING THE DEVIL.” It was ft d'.rk and s n’ght* a night to fill tqp soul with fight; th« thunders pualod, the lightnings sash ed, the wild beasts squealed and the elements clashed, while the rain from above in torrents dashed, when a poor preacher of the gospel wended his way through the dismal intricacies of a Western Forest many years ago. The poor man felt anything but comfortable, for he was wet through to the skin, and almost tired to death.— He had been tramping about since morning, besides he had lost his wav, so the reader can guess the state of mind he was in, and also appreciate the sudden transition from despair which he experienced on seeing the glimmer of a light ahead. He quick ened his hugging footsteps and soon came up to the light which issued from the only window of a solitary log cabin in the forest. Remembering the scriptural injunc tion, “knock and it shall be opened unto you,” he did so; but without meet ing with any response. He rapped again louder than before, ana this time a gruff female voice asked: “Who’s there ?” “It’s I,” was the definite reply of our rain-soaked parson. ‘‘Well, who are you, and what do you want ?” asked the voice gruffer than before. “A poor, benighted preacher of the gospel who has lost his way, and who wishes to stay here to-night,” answer ed the parson in a dolorous voice. “Well, stay there—J don’t sec what's to hinder 3*011!” “But I am almost starved, and will pay you liberally for some supper, ’ Ue responded, chattering with cold and not in the least appreciating the joke. The words ‘ liberal pa, ’ acted like open sesame! and after a few moments of delay, occasioned by the unfasten ing of the door, it was opened and our parson entered. 'He found himself in a rough apart ment with a large tire place at one end, on which a great log-fire blazed; a rough deal table and three chairs, besides a box filled with dry flax, com prised its furniture. But all minor deficiencies seemed to be more than made up by’ the lady of the house, for she was fully six feet in height and weighed nigh unto three hundred pounds. After having placed some food on the table, she turned to the parson, who stood shivering before the fire, making futile attempts to dry himself by alternately turning one side, then the other, to the fire. “Now I want you to eat this grub as quick as you know how, and then tramp, for it’s perfectly impossible for mo to keep you here over night!” “But, my good woman,” said the parson anxiously, “I shall perish in this inclement weather; I have been wandering in this fearful storm ever since morning, and if you have any compassion or pity at all you will try and give me some place where I can be sheltered from tlais storm for the night/’ and he offered her a five dollar note. “Well,” said the woman, avaricious ly clutching the money, ‘if you think you can stay in the garret, maybe you can stay; but hurry up, for I expect my husband home every minute, aud it’s as much as your life is worth if he should find 3*ou here, for he’s a very devil incarnate, and would think no more of murdering you than he would of shooting a grizzly !” The woman produced a short lad der as she spoke, and bade the parson to get up in the garret. There was a small ‘d.op’ or trap door in the ceiling, which raised of its own accord on the parson’s head press ing it upward, and not without some difficulty he managed to squeeze him self through the aperture. After he was up, the old woman told him to shut the trip and not to make any noise for nis life, and then taking the ladder away, the parson was left to his own reflections. Wet and uncomfortable as he was, such was his fatigue that he had al most fallen asleep when he was dis turbed by some one’s knocking at the door. Being somewhat curious too see what sort of a man his unknown host was, he arose and peered through a small crack in the floor into the room beneath. He saw the woman open the door cautiously, aud after admitting a short, tnick-set man, in a heavy cloak, lock and bolt it agaiu. From the mysterious actions and whisperings that ensued, our parson rightly concluded that the person who had just entered was not tne woman’s husband, but her paramour, who had taken advantage of the husband’s ab sence to pay the woman a nocturnal visit. After whispering together for a awiiile the woman went to a cupboard and produced a bottle of whiskey and a plate of ham and bread, which she set upon the table and the twain were soon engaged in a loving repast. While tbe parson was watching the guilty couple there came a thundering knock at the door, which caused them both to jump to their feet in the great est con sterna tiou. Without a mo ment’s loss of time, the woman ran to the large box of flax and emptied its contents upon the floor; she then bade the man, who was almost scared to death, to get info the flax, which he was only too glad to do, and when he was in she rapidly covered him up with the flax. The woman then ran to the door and uubolted it, all the while rubbing her eyes as if just awak ened out of her sleep. “Why the devil don’t you let a fel ler stand outside all nigut!” exclaim d the new-comer, a tall, powerful, jllainous looking man, clad in a ban- W's garb, as fie dealt her a ringing box on the ear. “I was asleep aid didn’t hear you before!” whiuq ered the woman.— “And don’t, for Gjd's suke, tur.se so much, for there’s a iletaodist minister up in the garret!” W ho cares for Methodist ministers, Id like to know ? But I 1 soon have him out «f his hole! Here, 3'ou old canting, hypo rite, come out o’ this and show yourself, or 111 make jou!” he exclaimed, with many imprecations, as he sot the ladder before the trap door. The poor parson, al nost dead with frignt, slowly descended - the ladder, looking as white as a ghost, for from the ruffian's manner, he expected that he would be a ghost shortly. “Don’t hurt the poor man! See how sickly he looks,” exclaimed the woman, pitying the poo; parson s dis tress. “You shut up, and mind yer business, or it’ll be the worse for you,” was the gracious rej ly of her lord; then, turn ing to the trembiing parson, he asked: “Are }’ou a Methodist preacher, and do you blieve in hell and the devil ?” The parson replied in the affirma tive. “Well, then, by the eternal, I don’t! and if } r ou believe in the devil you’ll either make him appear, or I’ll cut yer lying throat aud make you appear be fore him!” and he drew his bowie knife in a threatening manner. The poor preacher was in anything but an enviabie situation, and thoughts of the other world began to till his mind with anxious forebodings; for it is a remarkable fact that however much clergymen may preach and talk of the joys and bliss of the future world they prefer to have others go j and enjoy it. This may be self-abnegation or pure unselfishness—Heaven knows! “Are you most ready ?” asked the ruffian, raising his knife as he saw the other hesitated, “I’ll gtvo you just three minutes, and if the devil is not here then, you’ll be with the devil!” “My friend,” said the parson, into whose head a brilliant idea had pop -ped, “that there is a hell is a well es tablished fact, as I can prove by hun dreds of writers, and that the devil exists allows no contradiction; and that I have the power to make him ap pear is also true; but dreadful for you will be the consequence if he does ! Better if you had never been born than to see Satan face to face in the wick ed state in which you are in !” “D 11 you ! stop your preaching and call the old boy. I’ll stand the consequences; and be quick about it, for time’s up.” ' The parson went to the fire place and took thence a burning brand, which he applied to the box of dried flax. It blazed up almost like gun powder, and the unearthly yell that issued from the poor devil in ike box was truly appalling. W ith an acrobatic power of the pos session of which he was himself una ware, he leaped out of lhe box cover ed from heaa to foot with the burning flax. With roars and hovds of agony he made straight for the door, but he was not so quick as the owner of the premises, for one look of terror at the burning figure he tied out of the house closely followed by his “Satanic Ma jesty.” When they were both gone, the par son gave his hostess a short but effec tive lecture on connubial duties, after which he seated himself comfortaly be fore the fire. When the woman’s husband return ed he treated the parson with the greatest respect, fully convinced that he had the power to raise the devil at will. Sigma Alpha Epsilon Conven tion. —~ Peabody House, Memphis, Tknn., \ July Bth, 1870. j Editors Constitution: You have many readers in Columbus, Atlanta and throughout the South, who are inter ested in the advancement and prosper of the “ Sigma Alpha Epsilon ;” hence it may not be amiss to give you a few items of the proceedings of the Gene ral Convention of that fraternity in this city recently. As advertised in your columns and elsewhere some time ago, the annual Convention of the various chapters met here on the morning\ of the Gth instant, with a full and imposing dele gation from tiie Southern States. You must know that this is a col lege organization of a secret and liter ary nature composed of the most se lect members of the classes, chosen on accouut o f their mental and moral worth. The closest ties of intimacy and friendship are cultivated and ce meuted during college days, and en joiued upon every member of the fra | ternity through life. Owing to the congeniality of minds, this friendship is not evanescent as schoolboy friend ships usually are; but they remain through life a true band of brothers. But to proceed: The convention i was, after prayer, organized by the 1 election of officers as follows: President—S. S. Murdock, of Geor gia. - | Vice PresidenUt-S. D. McCormick, ■ of Kentucky. Secretary.—A H. Lusk, of Tennes see. At the fifth and last setting of the convention, other business being dis posed of, the literary contestants for prizes read their essays and poems.— Mr. W. D. Trammell, of Georgia, a ! talented member of Franklin College I Athens, Georgia, was awarded the prize, for the best essay; and J. B. B. Smith, a young man of rare genius, of the same college, from Atlanta, Geor gia, the prize for the best poem ! Nashville Wits appointed ».s the next place of meeting, aid the convention adjourned sing die. Oh! but the re-union at Gaston’s on the 7th, after adjournment, was the rarest treat of all. There the poet, the logician, the wit, the essayist, the orator, either undei-graduates or else honorary members who had passed out of college life into the broad world assembled, and made it a feast of reas on and flow of soul—pure, intellectual enjoyment. And the feast prepared for the occasion, and the orations and poems, and sallies of wit anti h tuor, tempered with the purest brotherly j feelirg. made this a grand event, in the I lives of the Tralert A few of the ap-! pointed orators, including Mr. Walter 1 Gordon, of 3'onr city, the incipient peer i of his brother in eloquence, failed to come. We missed them. An}* honorary members of the brotherhood can obtain further infor mation by addressing any one of the above name 1 officers. Sigma. S®.
