Bro Harrison, of the “Alouroe Ad

Another reason is, the people are able

We regret to see tin position taken
by our esteemed cotomporary, the

of relief. We g itlnr from a recent

discharged by an net of Legislation.—
We have regarded our neighbor as
Democratic and Constitutional in its
faith; we cannot see how it can wink
at an act violative of contracts, im
pairing of obligations perhaps we
misunderstood it. Hive the people
not already been relieved to their
heart’d content? With a fortune of
$3,003 in gold, settled on them by law;
how much more can they ask? that
amount settled on each head of a fam

Suppose the people should demand

pose they ask a division of the lands,
could that paper sustain them ?
Would It encourage agrarian Uws?
Now, if the “Intelligaocer” proposed j

“The weak eateth herbs,” says St. Paul,
eo that eighteen hundred years ago the vaj
tie of medicinal plants was appreciated. In
the Old Testament botanical remedies are
lepcatedly lecornntended, but in no passage
of sacred history is man recommended to
swallow calomel, or blue pill, or any other
mineral preparation, The sick were di
rccted to eat herbs to strengthen them, to
heal them, to restore them. In that day the
art of making vegetable extracts was un
known. The herbal nicd.ctucs were mere
imudous.
. It was reserved tor a later age to unite the
sanitary essences ot tonic, i.p -rien: and anti
t illiou-t io ’ts, barks, and plants, with an
active stimulant, and thus secure their rap
i i dilh s on through the debilitated or dis

Never yet, lhoiigfi eighteen yeais have e ap

It is taken at all seasons, in all climes, as
the most potent sale-guard against epidem
ics, as a protection again it ail unhealthy
exhalations that produce debility or beget
disease; as a remedy for intermittent and
other malarious fevers; as an appetizer; as
a sovereign cure for dyspepsia; as a general
tonic and invigoraut; a- a gentle painless
aperient; as a blood uepurent; as a nervine;
as acme for bilious aiUeiions; as a harmless
anodyne; and as the best defence of health
under unfavorable circumetances, such as
sedentary pursuits, undue bo .ily or mental
exertion, hardship, privation and exposure.
Pain may be said to follow pleasure as its
shallow, but the mislortuue is that in this
particular case, the substance belongs to the
sha-.vow; the empt.ness to its cause. But
pain may be relieved, arid the affliction
earned to turn from --mourning into glad
ness,” inasmuch as the “Old Carolina liit
