“The anmes inirabilis with Mr.
Wayne, had passed, but lie had not
returned yet. When would lie return ?
This laconic query revolved in Elda’s
mind. Many mouths before, when
the tide of correspondence was high,
he liad written, that lie would come to
claim the object ot his love. She had
gradually, assumed a half belief, that
Mr. Wh yne had cither insincerely
forced her to believe, he entertained
feelings ol love for her—or that he had
been fictile and wavering. Oh ! could
she believe that he was a vagrant from
love’s holy shrine, and made the suh
juect one of levity which he had
previously avowed to be espoused,
indissolubly ? Had lie treated it as an
infantile idea of feeling?—or would he
intentionally, jeopardize a heart, hither
to, in embryo, concerning affection ?”
It was rather a warm day, near mid
summer, as Elda enjoyed a familiar,
delightful walk in Mr. Wayne's front
floral mead of most luxurant shade.
She was refoeilliting herself, physic
ally, after much mental occupation. :
The completed oeuvres of nature that
art had suggested and began, were
clothed in a vernal parure , and the
delightful romance that was offered did
not fail to entrance her. The solemn j
pensive cooing—the low matin song of
a remote dove wafted on odoriferous
wings of nature’s soft, placid, soothing j
breath was an alto as sweet, sym- ,
phonions and melifluons as the dulcet I
rythm from euphonic 2Eolian lyre or j
Pandean pipe. And the ethereal mild- i
ness of morning’s holy hush was
rendered doubly so, by the pefect
taciturnity dominant around, and all
nature held a profound solemnity, of
“Which the only sound
Os leaves and fuming rills, Aurora’, fan,
Lightly dispersed.”
The marked appearance of Elda’s
form to-dav, would not fail to have
been admired. A light muslin dress
can be said to have constituted her
attire, \et thus plainly yclad she was
so lovely as nearly to rival Mother
Eve as portrays her Milton :
“With tresses discomposed and glowing
cheek —
Shot forth peculiar graces.”
She wandered through this Elysium
of loveliness, till exabruptu, she reach
ed a gale leading into a grove of
majestic oaks and“spreading beech.
Looking upon the realms of Sylvatius
and the shaded earth she lisped dis
tinctly these lines of Bryant’s “Forest
Hymn”:
“Father thy hand
Hath reared these venerable columns.
Thou did‘st weave this verdant roof.”
Enraptured she stood wondering at
the infinite poSver of her Almighty
Creator, when she was startled by a
stern voice ; yet familiar, too. itseemed.
To the right, to the left she looked for
its owner. But not until a second
time of its utterance did she discover
the intruder:
“Enfeoff! !”
A single coup d'oeil in the direction
of the elegant demeure sufficed for her
to recognize its owner.
“EufeofT!” was it reiterated.
“Oh 1 Mr. Wayne. Thank God!
come at last!” exclaimed Elda, path
etically. “Oh ! what an oecumenical
deceiver you are. “Yoti Wrote you
Would come sooner*”
“How do you do, Miss Lyle?—glad
to see you. Quite well? You appear
very rosv indeed. Are all well!”
“Yes, sir, yes, sir! Oh! how glad I
am to see you once more.”
“Well, i must first extricate myself
from this latayrinthian wood. Show
me my house. Ha !ha !”
He abruptly and rapidly left Elda
and went toward the house. What
frigidity and extreme formality there
Was in his manner toward her. This
was contre her expectation. Oh ! what
a blow it was to her heart.
»‘Ali ! —me,” she sighed heavily.
She did not wish to follow him ant!
taciturnly glided out the oped gate,
nroceedmg homeward. She could not
deny the truth that in her mind the
dreaming architect had reared chateau
en Espagne, and entertained the
thought that she was loved! Rut how
poignantly, keenly was that fond ex
pectation but just now frustrated.
In her room she sat an gave vent to
bitter tears of disappointment. Who
can sav bow burning are the lachrymal
waters of the bear', wl e.i pierced by
the cruel dart of raelaticholly mortifi
cation.
“Oil ! my God, that I had never
known a word of affection —false—
tickle —love !”
Thus was her heart overflowing with
regret and disappointment, as she ut
tered her laconic prayer, that her Maker
might a low her stricken soul to bathe
in Lethean waters, and smother tier
quondam love for her deceiver, in j
oblivion.
For sevoial days after, Mr* Wayne j
was luxuriously delighting himself!
gathering many of his friends to his
dainty, luscious dinners am! teas, ami j
the wide halls of his domain, inces
santly rang with voluptuous music.
He was making halcyon moments in
his E ysian parlors, wide exquisitely
lurapiur and in tiiC Lcauty of Mis? Ida
Hargrove who was never absent dur
ing these festivities. Many delightful
buggy rides they enjoyed, together
while he pictured vividlv the scenes in
his travels. She listened too, with
glowing ardor to the sights of the ori
entals, as lie described them.
Meantime, the galling scorpion of
woe was gnawing deleteriously on the
injured, prostrate heart of fatherless
El da Lyle. Not once for several
weeks had she seen her former friend.
At length, after a partial subside of
his gay festivities. Mr. Wayne feeling
but little benefitted bv them was al
most suddenly reminded that it was
his duty to see Elda again, and sine
moru. What an ordeai ! Would he
boldly enter Mrs. Lyle’s demeurc
without a single feeling of regret ?
Somewhat more than a month after
Itis arrival from Europe, he was, one
quiet evening, from the wood of ty
pheean oaks that bounded the village
on the West, approaching Mrs* Lyle’s
dwelling. Ii was now Autumn, and
the leaves were beginning to assume a
fuillcmorte hue, and incessantly relaxed
their grasp from the branches.
As Mr. Wayne walked slowly along
he happened to glance into a little
woody retreat, and sp<ed whom be
would—a young lady with moistened
eyes, and sorrowful visage, yeleped
Elda Lyle. Truly she seemed in grief
metamorphnsticai. A single COHjtd'-
oeil was sufficient to recognize Mr.
Wayne’s handsome form.
“ Forma pulcherrimuV ’ exclaimed
he, in a lapsus lingua?. “Ob ! Elda,
Elda, once again lam allowed to see
you ”
“Good evening, sir!” she lisped
blondly with a turn of her head.
“Oh ! Elda, 1 have come once more
*to pour into your friendly bosom the
pathos of iny affected heart. Elda
don’t scorn me so, now —I am reso
lute—
“ Foul words and frowns must not repel
a loVer.”’
“Mr. Wavne, you insult me* sir,”
site replied, while her coral lips curved
in the contempt they bore.”
“Ah! tny beautiful Elda, what a
preternatural reply you return him
whom yon love, tam as surely acs
quainted with pathognomy, as of the
English language. Elda, allow me
encore to pour out my feelings to you.
I have to plead your pardon, for
once ”
“You are forgiven, sir—everything!”
«he said, with a careless look.
! “Elda, look at me —hear me. Oh !
let me speak with you.
‘Look the world’s comforter, but weary gait.
His days’hot task 1 ath ended in the West.’
And ere it has gone below the horizon,
speak me one, gent!a—sweet word—
‘For looks kill love ; and lovely looks reviveth
A smile recures the wounding of a frown.’
Elda, my lovely one, will you not
condescend to smile on 'ii** ?—oh! one
sweet .smile of approval ?”
“Mr, Wayne you are uttering words
and expressions that are only hypo
thetical, Yet speak, sir* if you wish.”
“Thank you, sweet angel,” he re
plied, grasping her hand pathetically.
One moment, lie stood looking on her,
and once more the engine ot his
thoughts began.
“llovv often have I hound my soul to
your sweet image and worshiped the
idol of my heart. Oil ! how ardently
do I love you, pure llhuriel one!
When I left here more than a year ago,
I made known my love to you, for the
first time. I traveled ; yrt I did not
lose your bright, cheering, image, here
stamped upon my heart —”
“Mr. Wayne, Mr. Wayne, how dare
you iterate such words, that I do most
assuredly doubt. I would sooner trust
in the reality of the Bactylia, as what
von now utter. You, sir, have been
false—derived me—l cannot believe
otherwise. Why did you ever speak
this to me ?”
She paused, and her glittering eves
flashed with contempt. She appeared
as offended as if the spirit ol Juno had
been transmigrated to strengthen the
ire of her own. And then
“Once more the ruby-colored portal opened,”
“Mr. Wayne, you must never speak
of dove’ to me again. You have given
me reason ”
“Oh ! beautiful Elda. I pray you, do
not frown on one who loves you. \ou
accuse me of inconstancy. Here love
ly one, take my enchiridion and search
il. In it is a historielte of my T travels,
yet it is crowd and wi ll epithet, but
feeble expreslions of my feelings for
you, while far distant. Now do not
say lam fickle or lalse. Believe me,
iny dearest Elda—l love you. ’
Momentarily he ceased.
“Sweet on e, quae nunc animo sen
tenlia surg'd ? Will you not forgive
what you have thought erroneous
in me pretty friend ? Elda, Elda. oh !
mv swelling heart —oh! he my wife,
darling—he mv own sweet w ife In
herit yon dwelling as its true and only
chore ami. I have as much right to
your love as I have to my own l ead.—
I will always prove your fulus A chads
through my life —only beiny loving and
loved wife.”
He held her in liis arms while so pa
thetically he spoke, and large tears
rolled irom his eyes on his cheek.
“Oh! what burning tears of passion
are *liese.
Aml then obdurate, flinty, hard as st-el.
.Nay more than fl.nt .for sme at rain rc
ia.Uth !
NO. 40,

“Sir, 1 must again assure you that
my feelings are as di lie rent from the
indulgences of Panthea, as your nnc
nificent domain is Irom iny birth plac"
two score and ten miles from here. I
could never be your wife. Already'
vou are, l hear, engaged to Mist*
Har ”
“And 1 tell you Elda. who ever
told you that uttered a falsehood !”
“Ob ! sir, l am but too truly assu
red that vou do nt least love her vi
talh—though simpleton i am to say it.
If.! what does it concern me 7 Now
sir unhand me.”
She looked at him plainly showing
that she. was now irresistibly
convinced in that suspicion, that months
ago had harshly rang in her ears.
“My distracted heart! must I refuse
to give vent to thy fond thohbings.—
Oh Li hat iny soul had a voice to speak
as illy lips are frail in expressing what
Elysian, celestial devotion, there flows
in the gushing stream of my heart. —
Oh! cursed be the \vrters of Selem
noit it such the heart of yours, pure one,
has formed' Darling Elda believe that
I would sooner speak to these oaks of
this feeling, il mv lips were uttering
what is false. Nay,—they yet con
vey hut feebly, too inex pressihly, iho
enthusiasm, and transport of iny
breast.”
“Ah ! sir, hill only touch the bubble
ol your love, and it will he annihilated
in an instant, and he forever in oblivi
on. Not without pain do I hear you
more sir. Unliand me.”
“Elda, Elda, it such cruel words
were returned to your heart with the
pain they bring to mine you would soon
cease uttering them. Has the love
you once cherished, been as brief nsthfi
experience of the Ephemeron ? Once
more I solemnly swear, that il mortal
ever loved, it is I. If ever a passion
compassed the liunmn heart, docs it
mine. If ever a truth was conscien
siously uttered it is a most solemn one
I now reiterate. 1 am enveloped in*
a neverceasing—eternal love for you'
sweetest angel. Again 1 ask you to bo
mv darling angelic wife, or you house'
ever remains without its mistress.
“In vain you speak Mr. Wayne.—
Oh ! why did not my Heavenly Father
take me before, My Savior inspire me !'
This is an ordeal Mr. Wayne, that is
taxing me weightily.”
Here she fell upon her knees, and l
clasping her now pearly hands together
implored:
“Most loving Redeemer, look down
upon thy servant. Help her in her
thoughts and words. God bless him
who hears this simplr prayer.”
“Rising she said to Mr. Wayne :
“My kind benefactor, I trust run, I
loved vou once. Once, yes, wouM>
it have been a decided untruth to have
denied that fact. Now it would he oivc
to say that l do cherish any feeling'be
yond that of a thankful IVieml. M'ay
the Supreme Ruler reward vow for
your unutterable kindness, is the feebly
spoken prayer of your true friend and
sister Elda Lvle. It is nearly d-usk al
ready : good evening, sir !”
“Elda, l hope mv poor heart will be
able to stand this blow, but be assured
that until death influences one of onr
bodies. I will never cease to love you.
Soon to meet again. AtrevUrr,
Quickly Elda hastened homeward.
She paused once on her way when she
he.«rd a long lotxl groan behind her.—•
As fearful as an ElGhoulan would' he,
when frightened by some terrible omen,
she fled into her meek home.
What a terrible night, the ensuing
proved ! Elda awoke next morning un
conscious, with burning temples;: and
as to her mind, she was in a raving
frenzy. She was delirious for several
ensuing days. Her brain was mortal
ly afl’erted. Physicians waited at her
bed-side, anxiously and dubiously.
What a sudden attack it was!
A few more days sufficed, t«» show
on which side of that fearful brink of
death, sbe lay most
'l'lie western orb was making tbc
