obtained from the need crushed in the territory Ut hut ary to the mills in

A question which naturally aiises in tms, connection it the possibility
•. i coir elating desirable characters It haa been tnougnt by many who have
net investigated the question that high oil content and eaxliasss could
probably not he secured in the same variety it seen* evident, however,
from work which has been carried on for seveial years past that tnex* is
a def, >ite correlation between high oil content and earflueat and satisfac
tory yields. This >* a very important matter and will certainly exert a
male; ,tl influence on the * eilet lion of planTng seed in the imanedist* fu
ture. As in all instances nature has thus, through a wise provision, pro
vided for the changes which the boll weevil is forcing upon us through
necessitating the selection of early maturing varieties for planting
Today we stand at the threshold of knowledge so far as the latsnt poa
sibilitie of cotton improvement through seed selection ate conoernad. Ws
know enough to realize that unlimited opportunities lie before us in the
direction indicated, and it is believed it will prove such an alluring Held
lo the ins estimator ihai result*; of vast economic importance to southern agrt
caltn e will soon be obtained through the united co-operative effort of tts
farmer, the oil miller, the plant breeder, the chemist and the commonwealths
having in charge the destinies of our agricultural colleges and which, through
the appropriations accorded these institutions, are to determine the uf
p ogress which we will tnul.e in tbit fundamental work. ,
