TOWN WELL NAMED
Bridgewater, \ irginia, and
i
its Long Bridge.
Tilt: OLD AM) MODERN
I
The Prettiest Small Town in the
Great and Picturesque
Shenandoah Valley-
Friday evening, after the horse
show, I boarded the train for this
place. As it is only eight rniDs, I
was soon grasping the hands of
friends who gave me such a hearty ,
welcome as to make me feel that I
wis again at home. Here it was
that over four years of my early
married life were :p tit,surrounded
by many near and dear relatives
on both sides, nearly all of whom
have gone to their reward; but
there are children and grandchil
dren of these, with now and then
the familiar face of an old-time
friend, enough to make me feel at
home.
Tins place enjoys the reputation
of being the p ettiest small town
in the valley. It is situated on
the north side of the North river,
the Noith.South and Middle rivers
coming togeihef not many miles
below this, forming the Shenan
doah, which traverses the whole of
the eastern side f the county.
The Harrisonburgh and Warm
Sp-ing turnpike runs through li re.
Along this the old town extends
fir a mile, shaded by beautiful
maple treer. in some places the
limbs from the two sides interlap
ping, thus making it a verit ible
paradise for the summer loafer
A majority of the old houses are
built even with the sidewalks, hut
the modern buildings have done
a..ay with this style and have
small yards in front. There are
now several new streets, with mod
ern houses.
Here is a splendid college be
longing to the Ounkards, a Ger
man Baptist sect, the best agri
cultural people of this section.
They have a campus of ten acres,
beautifully situated, with all the
necessary buildings for a well
equipped school. It has a good
patronage, representing several
states. This people, when I left
here, did not believe in higher edu
cation, but now they have many
fine schools and as fine professors
as can be found. Many are mov
ing here to educate their children.
In a mile along the river are
four fine water powers, three of
which are utilized, a woollen
factory and flouring mill at one, a
mill at another; the third furnishes
the power for an electric plant; the
fourth has not been utilized, the
old mill having been washed away.
The town is lighted by arc lights,
but the council have put a little
more work upon each than they
are able to do; consequently each
o le is so busy with its own work
as not tobe able to contribute much
to the general effect.
There are four denominations
which have church buildings. The
Methodists and Presbyterians pre
dominate. There is also preach
ing every Sunday night at the col
iege chapel.
There is a very prosperous bank
here, with home capital and run
upon the Witharn system. It was
started on a small capital, but has
increased every year. I learn its
stock will bring $1.75 and none to
sell.
Over the river here is the longest
one span wooden bridge in the
United Slates, if not in the world.
Many bridge builders said it was
an impossibility, but at last a com
mon carpenter, who once lived
, always kecp on hand

What to Do.
There is comfort in the knowledge so
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-
Roct. the great kidney remedy fulfills every
wish in curing rheumatism, pain is the
back, kidneys, liver, bladder and every part
of the urinary passage. It corrects inability
to hold water and scalding pain in passing
it. or bad effects following use of liquor,
wine or beer, and overcomes that unpleasant
necessity of being compelled to go often
during the day, and to get up many times
during the night. The mild and the extra
ordinary effect of Swamp-Root is soon
realized. It stands the highest for its won
derful cures of the most distressing cases.
If you need a medicine you should have the
best. Sold by druggists in 50c. andsl. sizes.

Just as the south entrance of
the bridge is left we find the old
homestead of my former friend
u mi present Georgia neighbor, Mr.
G urge R. Gibbons. This is a beau
tiful and produc ive place. It has
been subdivided, and is now the
home of several prosperous farm
ers. Tne old house and surround
ings are almost as they were wb< u
the former occupants left them in
1868 for their Georgia homes.

When the horse picks up a nail
in his foot what does the driver do?
Does he whip the limping, lagging
animal and force him along? Not
unless he wants to ruin the horse
At the first sign of lameness he
jumps down, examines the foot and
carefully removes the cause ot the
lameness. What is called “weak
stomach” is like the lameness of
the horse, only to be cured by
removing the caust of the troub’e.
If you stimulate the stomach with
“whisky medicines” you keep it
going, but every day the condition
is growing worse. A few doses
sometimes of Dr. Pierce’s Golden
Medical Discovery will put the
disordered stomach and its allied
organs of digestion and nutrition
in perfect condition. Ninety-eight
times in every hundred “Golden
Medical Discovery will cure the
worst ailments originating in dis
eases of the stomach. It always
helps. It almost always cures. To
cure constipation use Dr. Pierce’s
Pleasants Pellets. They’re sure.

Heaithy Mothers.
Mothers should always keep in
good bodily health. They owe it to
their children, Yet it is no unusual
sight to see a mother, with babe in
arms, coughing violently and ex
hibiting all the symptoms of a con
sumptive tendency. And why should
this dangerous condition exist, dan
gerous alike to mother and child,
" hen Dr. Bosehee's German Svrup
would put a stop to it at once? No
mother should he without this old
and tried remedy in the houst—for
its timely use will promptly cure any
lung, throat or bronchial trouble in
herself or her children. The w orst
cough or cold can be speedily cured
by German Syrup; so can hoarseness
and congestion of the bronchial tubes.
It makes expectoration easy, and
gives instant relief and refreshing
rest to the cough racked consumptive.

His Speech in Marietta Mostly W ind-- De
livered to Small Crowd.
The Rev. Thad Pickett, pretcher
and political ic'ormer, spoke in
Marietta a few da*s ago The
Marietta Journal gives the follovv
; ing account;
Rev. Thad Pickett, who ‘‘walk
ed“ several times for congress as
an independent in the
I ninth district, moved into the sev-
I enth district, and is at it again.
He represents no pirty, no prin
ciple. nor any thing, nor any <#ie,
but himself. He just simply wants
to go to congress, but never will.
He spoke here Friday.
And we heard that speech. It
was Sound! Sound! Win- ! Wind!
It was devoid of any semiment,
principle or argument that would
commend him as worthy to repre
sent the people in congress.
It lacked all the essentials of
making votes. It appealed to no
intelligent conviction or elevating
principle, and did not inspire ap
plause except when Watson’s
“name” was mentioned, and that
was very feeble, as there were not
over fifty people present.
His remarks consisted of criti
cism and ridicule of Parker, Cleve
lind and the democratic party, and
he said there was no difference be
tween the parties, and that Bryan
had fallen down and worshipped
the golden calf because he pre
ferred peace to silver agitation.
Pickett didn’t have a word of
condemnation of Roosevelt, social
equality, the republican party, its
extravagance, militarism and impe
rialism, but seemed to be pleased at
the thought tnat Roosevelt might
be elected and Parker defeated.
He didn’t advance a single prop
osition or principle that he would
seek to carry out if elected, or
what it was possible to do as bush
whacking independent in a body of
congressmen composed of
crats and republicans.
He advanced the strange propo
sitioa that if a man took part in a
democratic; prim try he was not
bound to support the notnineeun
] rss he was sworn or took an oath
to abide the result, but that such ;
ill plied goai faith and fairnes- j
was no more than a man taking off j
his coat and going to bed at night,
and yet be is a preacher of right
eousnes!
If the managers of the election |
had demanded an “oath” as a
requisite to vote, the voters would
have considered it an insult, an
impeachment of their honor and
manhood, Yet this seducer of
political virtue would have these
men to do this thing, vote for an
independent who is without a party,
and stands for nothing under the
sun but an undying ambition to go
to congress!
Alas, and “What did the Wog
gle bug say?”
