u, "> Ul *u soon we have passed over
tlie river and find ourselves in the old
town of Murphy, the countv site of Cher
okee, X. C., and oh, how changed since
1878. when I was last there, then a dull
little inland town, the people lounging
about the streets and the merchants and
loafers sitting around the store doors.
Now 1 see, perhaps, more than one
hundred new buildings, and more build
ing push and enterprise seem to be de
picted on every face. Old Rip Van Win
kle has been aroused from his long slum
bers b\ the snort of the steam horse.
Murphy will soon be an attractive place.
It is a beautiful situation, on a bluff, at
the junction of the Hivvasseeand Valley
rivers. All the hotels and boarding
houses are full of health seekers.
We were driven’to tho house of S. W.
Davidson. Ksq.. where we received such a
hearty and cordial welcome. My mind
at once reyerted to the old Methodist
hymn :
*• [si< be tlie tie that binds
<>ur hearts in Christian love ;
Tie-fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.”
After resting a short time, Daisy and 1
began walking around taking in the
scene before us. On the boulevard we
could see the beautifhl Valley liver and
the Xantahola and Willey River moun
tains in the distance. My mind went
back to my schoolboy days, and could
but exclaim: ‘•Oh, ye crags and peaks,
1 ftm with you once again 1 if I could
only have time to visit the scenes of my
childhood, on Jonathans creek, in Hay
wood county, where I first learned to
lisp the name of mother; and then, in
boyhood and manhood, in the old State j
of Buncomb, my joy would have been
complete. ’’ 1 expect to finish my trip in
1889. as the Western North Carolina
Railroad will reach Murphy during the
fall or winter.
After a pleasant night’s rest we com
menced visiting our relatives, dining
with Mrs. Margaret Hughes, my niece,
and Mrs. Moss, my sister, Monday, with
Major Mark Britton, then up lliwassee
river with Col. H. 11. Davidson; Mr. John
McCombs, and back in Murphy with
Bascom Pass, and Mrs. K. V. Davidson,
on Noth’ river, ten miles from Murphy,
where we also met Mr. Allen Dickey and
lady, and Mr. doll u Dickey, Our entire
trip was an ovation, meeting so many
friends and relatives, and several of rny
old comrades in the army. On our re
turn. Mr. Bradley conductor, everything
was pleasant until we reached Nelson's,
where we overtook a wrecked freight
train, and the trackbeing; badly torn up,
we were stopped about one hour, giving
the passengers a good chance to visit
tin* marble works. It was a great curi
osity to most of us to witness the pro
cess of sawing, sanding, polishing, and
in the finishing room visitors are not ad
mitted; we could only peep through the
screens at the windows. Quite an exten
sive business is done. 1 have forgotten
the style .of the tjrm. Alter waiting
awhile fin engine came up with a fiat ear
;md fill tlie passengers were placed on it.
Supt. (Raver was present,. arranging
boxes, trunks, etc., for seats for the lady
passengers, and away we went oh the
fiat car to Canton, sixteen miles, and
there our conductor got a box car and
stored us away in it. Wo were fill well
pleased, as it had began to rain. We ar
