The words so touchingly written by
John W. Akin about the death of that
noble Christian woman, Mrs. Serena I).
Munford. will strike a vein of sympathy
that will staid an echo of their sentiment
in the hearts of all her hosts of friends
who may read them. She was indeed a
blessing to her own generation, and her
memory will long linger, like the mellow

generation to follow.
Those desirous of purchasing splendid
property should read the advertisement
of commissioners’sale of the Moseley &
Used lot near Stileboro, a valuable tract
on Euharlee creek in Polk, some fine iron
ore property near, some good bottom
land in an adjacent tract, all combined
in the well known Dickerson place—keep
their eye on the date and attend the sale
on the first Tuesday in November, in
this city. It will be a rare opportunity
and the shrewd investor nor the seeker
of a pleasant and desirable home should
neither fail to be on hand.
Dr. W. 11. Felton delivered a speech at
the court house last Saturday on the po
litical issues of the day, which was lis
tened to with profound interest by a
most intelligent and appreciative au
dieuce, mainly made up of farmers. He
dwelt mainly upon the importance of
the State retaining her hold upon the
State road, giving many cogent reasons
why it should not go into the hands of
those whose interests are foreign to our
own. He strongly defended the interests
of the farmer and laboring classes, and
indicated needed legislation looking to
this end The doctor is always inter
esting, and our people esteem it a treat
to hear him. He is a candidate for the
legislature, and whenever he is in the
field, in Bartow county, his election is
considered a foregone conclusion.
Death of an Infant.
Died in Chattanooga, Sunday last,
Walter Oliver, infant son of Mr. and
Mrs. R. H. Rogers. The remains were
brought here Sunday and interred in

About Gold.
Information just received by a certain
indefatigable friend of Bartow county’s
material growth and to the importance
of a constant lookout for good things, is
to the effect that new openings on our
gold leads near the county line are pan
ning good results. These same leads
penetrate Bartow county, and our in
former says we ought to be at work on
them in a dozen places, at least, before
strangers absorb all the cream therein.
The Tabernacle Meeting.
The first service of the Tabernacle
meeting will be held at 10:30 next Fri
day morning.
The opening sermon will be preached
by Rev. Dr. Lockwood if he arrives in
time. If he should not be on hand Rev.
Sam Jones will preach. There will be
three services each day during the meet
ing—morning, afternoon and night.
The railroads will sell excursion tickets
during the meeting.
The E. &. W. It. It. of Ala., will run
special trains between Cedartown and
Cartersville, commencing Monday, 17th j
inst., until the close of the meeting; and !
on Sundays special trains from Pell City
to Cartersville —one fare for round trip.
These trains will be run so as to allow
for attending the services and returning
home at convenient hours.
Hotels and boarding houses in the city
will give special low rates. <
A first class restaurant will be run on
the Tabernacle grounds, where parties
who do not choose to bring their meals
can be supplied.
Reliable Instruments.
Prof. F. L. Freyer, of the firm of Frey
er & Bradley, of Atlanta, was in the city
yesterday, moving among his friends.
The professor has sold pianos and or
gans in this section for twenty years, and
it is but natural for the people to think
of him when wanting to buy a piano or
organ. In this day of shoddy and unre
liable instruments, we are fortunate in
having such dealers so near at hand.
His house is located at *27 Whitehall
street, Atlanta—having as partners his
son, Chas. H. Freyer. also well known
here, and Samuel Bradley, for the last
nine years, as head salesman with the
Estey Company. They represent only
the very best and most reliable instru
ments made, which they fully warrant
and sell on reasonable and accommoda

Rack From New York.
Mr. J. P. Jones returned home last
Saturday. He reports business lively in
New York. Southern merchants were
there in large numbers, and all seemed
cheerful and hopeful—considering the
outlook for business splendid.
“What do they think of Cartersville
up there?” we asked.
‘•Cartersville is well known and looked
upon as one of the best towns in Geor
gia—the truth is, they think our little
city is fairly humming with enterprise.
The wonderful mineral wealth of Bartow
county is common talk, and with proper
effort I think thousands will visit us
from the North the coming winter, with
a view to business. It made me feel
prouder than ever of Georgia and Bar
tow county to hear the good opinion
that others ha ve of our country.
Mr. Jones says the people among whom
he moved while in New York, seemed
nearly solid for Cleveland, and he thinks
the Democrats will carry the State by a
good majority.
“How about goods?”
“Well, I struck it just right—made
some grand ten strikes in the way of
bargains—and will have a huge stock,
and many eye-openers in the way of
prices—of which I will speak in my ad
vertisements.”
Technological School.
Monday of last week was the day set
apart by the Board of Education for the
examination of applicants for admission
to this school. Four young men were
promptly on hand when the hour ar
rived for the work to begin. The balance
of the day was spent in answering the
questions sent up by President Hopkins.
On the day following the Board began
the work of examining the papers of the
young men, and spent part of two (lays
at it.
All of the applicants did well, but Mr.
Charlie Pritchett, of this city, and Mr.
Eugene Dodd, of the 17th District, were
the successful contestants.
Mr. Pritchett made the highest mark,
and by his acquaintance with the mat
ters under consideration, reflects great
credit on the East Cartersville Institute
(under Profs’. Lee and Zellars), in which
he had been a student for the past year.
Mr. Dodd was very close to him, and
made a fine record tor himself.
The other young men did well, but
somebody must be ahead, and Pritchett
and Dodd are the men to represent Bar
tow county in the Technological School
the first year of its existence.
