Fashion Notes.
w York Sun.
This is a gold ami silver braid Reason.
The bustle is not moribund. It is
dead.
brick red or Venetian red shades are
in favor. .
Gobelin bine remains a very fashionable
eolor.
The sleeves of all wraps are made looser
and more flowing.
Two or more fabrics are used in the
combinations of all dressy .gowns.
Never was fashion soeapricious, varied,
and uduptublein her moods as she is this
fill.
All fashionable dresses have long dra
peries and very little looping of the skirt,
b irk or front.
Lmerald green is combined wit h tur
quoise bine in some of the most elegant
toques of this season.
The morning robe most in favor takes
the Princess form, but it is made with
many modifications.
The round hat or toque, with a straight
high crown, sunken in on the top, is a
first favorite* this season.
King Charles cloth is a fleece-woven
woolen cloaking stuff that is much in
favor for little gills’ “coats.”
Fringes, which for some years have
been neglected as trimmings, have again
been taken into fashionable favor.
Birds’ wings and tails, and quill feath
ers are much used in millinery, but whole
birds are no long* r seen on hats or bon
nets.
The very latest fa ncy in waists oi gowns
for grown women is the guimpe bodice,
very much like the guimpe waists of little
girls.
The wide Empire sash, passed twice
around the waist and knotted low on
one side, is seen on numbers of imported
fall costumes.
The variety in styles of wraps, bonnets,
hats, gowns, and ma terials this fall make
if a dress-as-you-please season and no
mistake.
The new French friozes are among the
warmest fleece woven cloakings that
come for children’s wear. They are very
thick, but light as a feather.
New waterproof garments come in the
form of loose fitting Ragians and New
markets with capes, and in plaids, checks
and stripes, with fine velvet finish.
All shades of green are immensely fash
ionable. and combinations of green with
blue browns and Venetian reds are seen
in Paris millinery and Pans gowns.
The ends of ribbon bows ami the fringes
of cut cloth are given the finish of passe
menterie spikes or ball on many of the
dressiest garments for big and little
people.
The favorite style for the cloth gown
is the Diivctoire, but dressy toilet of silk,
broche, moire, and plush demand the
dressier lines and fulness of the Empire
styles.
Green is an extremely fashionable color,
and in its various shades of emerald,
lapis lazuii, and berry is fashionably
combined with bines, oifves, browns and
dull reds,
Aiany of the gowns seen at the open
ings and privatedisplays of dress depart
ments during the past week were priced
at figures ranging from S4OO to S7OO,
and some were at SI,OOO. Who buys all
these costly gewgaws of fashion?
The buttons on dresses and wraps are
features this fall. A set of fine artistic
buttons costs almost as much as jewels,
and they are gems of art in the way of
carving, enaaiding, cut and faceted metal
and opaline and “cat’s-eye ' effects" in
nacre or mother of pearl, in all tints and
shades of color.
Supporting Lora 1 Papers.
The people of Radford will not look in
the direction of advertising the town.
They will even attempt to cripple their
town paper by patronizing offices of
other towns with their job work and so
fourth. Still every one expects the
Democrat to boom Radford for all it’s
worth.—Radford (Va.) Democrat.
We have seen many cases of this kind,
and some business men seem to be inca
pable of appreciating the fact that every
good local paper does its town ten times
a- much good as it is ever paid for. Men
having large interests in a town and
deeply concerned as to its progress often
try to see how little they can do for their
own local papers. The papers of the
south are to-dav doing far more for the
good of their countrv than they • reeei\ e
credit for. Day after day and week after
week they are telling of its advantages
of soil, climate and minerals and of its
progress. The facts which they give are
widely published in other papers, and
thus the good work is carried far beyond
their immediate circle of readers. The
Manufacturers' Record has often noted
with admiration the great work that
southern papers are doing, and regretted
to see how poorly in many cases they are
supported by the people whose interests
t hey are serving.—Manufacturers Record.
The first epidemics of yellow fever in
the Tinted States were in Boston, Now
York and Philadelphia. Fever appeared
in New York in 1702, and 500 people,
out of a population of 8,000, died, Ep
idemics also occurred therein 1 T-4-o, 1 <Ol
UDd 1798, about 2,000 people dying of
it in the last named year* In 1822 the
scourge broke out, and the board of
health put a IV-nce around Rector street,
extending the inclosure as the infection
spread. .The death, of yellow fever, of
Prof. Pr<in that city the other day,
will no doubt cause many people to pon
der over t hese facts, and to wonder if the
city is to be again uflii ‘ted.
A Life-Time Trouble Averted.
Tati: Springs, Tenn., July 4, 1888.
The Swift Specific Go,, Atlanta, Ga.:
During the spring of 1871. while work
ing in the field at. my home in Morgan
county, Ga., I pulled off my shoes to give
my feet a rest. Fnfortunately, 1 walked
into a clump of poison oak, and in* a few
days my feet were in a terrible condition,
and I could not put on a shoe because of
the soreness and swelling. I was treated
as poison oak cases usually are, and
everything was healed up. About the
same time the following spring, 1872,
my feet became sore again, as at first,
and every succeeding spring for fiveyears
brought back the same condition of the
disease, only each time it became more
distressing, because I began to think it
was a life-time trouble. Finally I was
induced to try Swift’s Specific. 1 took
six bottles and to-day am entirely well.
My improvement was gradual from the
first, and no evidence of the disase re
mains I shall taki* pleasure in testify
ing as to its curative properties. It Is
the greatest blood purifier in existence.
Yours truly, J. L. Morgan.
