t'OT the COIBANTAMKRL -IK. Tlif lta<l Lamb- of Dakota. BY .T. T. BELL. Passing Fogarty 14-0 utiles out, you come, to the celebrated Bad Lands, of Dakota, forty to fifty miles in width and two hundred miles north and south. Here is a wild weird place and well repays j the trip. He who has an eye for the ma jestic can have it satisfied. I altered into i them like the wind, as you thunder down the grade n wild sea erf mountain and cav tit, hill and hole, disfigured, and appearing as if ail the furies had here devised their hiding places—wild in the extreme and beyond the imagination to express. Where lives the poet or artist who can describe or paint them? Scott may picture the wilds of his bonny Scot land until we stand upon tlx-ir *crngs and walk upon the green heather. Long fellow may write of (iitehe Guinee and the pictured beauties of Superior, but who shall write of those wonders of our continent uud put such tilings to rhyme? Every second is a picture from which the curtain tins just been drawn, painted in living lights, only to reopen in more striking beauty and splendor at every change. Rocks varying and changing in color, giving red, grey and black and all the myriad colors of the kaleidoscope flitting before your eyes. Here a moun tain, there a hole, here a prei ipice upon which grazes the mountain goat, and there a cavern which may have been the den of wolves; there a bluff from which the Red .Man may have watched his equally wary foe. These are culled Bad Lands from the words, “man vases terras pour trav rsen,” meaning difficult to pass over or journey through, and well the appellation is ap plied. It would seem that neither foot of human or hoof of Beast could climb their steeps or descend their sharp declines. No tree except the sage bush and occasionally a cedar clinging to some rock for life. The dark Hues traceable in all the buttes and sides indicates deposits of lignite coal. The rocks and clay having been burned red by internal heat atid thrown to thesnrfaee, resembling pottery standing out like giant sentinels—jed eapped— to watch over the heaps and midnight fairies the Red Man supposed infested these dens. Huge petrifactions, some prostrate, some standing erect, scattered over portions of all these grounds, disclosing unmistakable evi dence of trunks, branches and roots of trees, that were either washed or grew here centuries ago. In tlie midst lies Sulley’s Springs, one house and two tents, where section men are boarded and whisky sold and where during the building of the road enough whisky was sold to flow to the hill tops. Hill Town, five miles beyond, once a town but now a few dilapidated dug outs formed in the hill’s side. These towns are frequent where men veritably lived the year around while building the road through these lands. Here were enacted many grave deeds that never met the light of civilization and no one knows the lives that went out from hardy border men while labor ing here. The spade and pick, cards and whisky, the gaming table and revolver, were their only associates. These hills and dales have echoed to many a report as some almost worthless life left its abode and was lain with the surrounding rocks soon to be forgotten. Such names us Dead Mau’sGulch. Devil’s Laneand Hell’s Alley are significant- and suggestive of scenes here enacted. These have been called good grazing lands, but there are portions that will only feed the moun- tain sheep and buffalo, forming the dis tinguishing barrier of civilization. Well can 1 understand ho,\ the Rad Man of one aide knew so little of tribes either east or west of him, calling this the evil spirit’s ground. A man and horse might pass, but a vehicle never unless some pass ex ists I know not of. The wind, sunshine and shower cannot be the same as float over other lands being imbued with that which generates the savage and makes of man, bird and beast—things of prey un known to the pure air that begets human ity in itsnoblest form. Thegreat bowels of the earth by uoheavels have thrown to the surface things laid buried since the flood, objects of all kindsaud conceivable shapes, trees, roots and stumps of petri faction, great clinkers of melted stones, headsaud trunksof animals longextinct. It is one mingled mass to amaze the be holder and pass to the nomenclature of the scientist. f hey are Legion. Sarsapnrillas and other advertised blood medicines are numerous, but the only one possessed of such superior cur ative properties as to warrant its man ufacturers in selling it, as they are doing, through druggists, under a pbsitive guarantee, is Dr. Fierce’s Golden Medi cal Discovery. If it don't benefit or cure you get the money back which you pay for it. It is recommended to cure all chronic liver, blood nnd lung diseases, as biliousness, skiu and scalp diseases, scrofulous sores and swellings, salt rheum, tetter, erysiindus aud even scrof ula of the lungs (or consumption), if taken in time. The longest train of farming imple ments that ever crossed the continent arrived in Chicago on Wednesday morn ing from Massillon, O. The train con sisted of twenty cars, in which were forty six threshers, thirty-two farm engines aud twenty-four horse-power engines. The value of the machinery was over fSU.OOO. Constipation Demands prompt treatinoht. The re sults of neglect may Do serious. Avoid all harsh and drastic purgatives, the tendency of which is to weaken the Bowels. The host remedy Is Ayer’s Tills. I make daily use of them in my practice.” Dr. I. E. Fowler, Bridge port, Conn. “I ran recommend Ayer’s Pills above all others, having long proved their value as a cathartic for myself and fatuily.” —J. T. Hess, Leitksville, Pa. " For several years Ayer's Pills have been used in my family. We fiud them aU I , Effective Remedy 4 for constipation and indigestion, and are never without them in the bouse.” Moses Grenier, Lowell, Mass. ‘‘l have used Ayer’s Pills, for liver troubles and indigestion, during many years, and have always found them Jirompt and efficient in their action.” j. N. Smith, Utica, N. Y. “ I suffered from constipation which assumed such an obstinate form that I feared it would cause a stoppage of the bowels. Two boxes of Ayer’s Pills ef fected a complete cure.” —D. Burke, Saco, Me. “ I have used Ayer’s Pills for the past thirty years aud consider them an in valuable family medicine. I know of no better remedy for liver troubles, and have always found them a prompt cure for dyspepsia.”—James Quinn, 90 Middle st., Hartford, Conn. “Haying been troubled with costive ness, which seems inevitable with per sons of sedentary habits, I have tried Ayer’s Pills, hoping for relief. I am glad to say that they have served" me better than any other medicine. I arrive fit. this conclusion only after a faithful trial of their merits.” Samuel T.
