ANOTHER BABEL. The liffol Tower at Three Hundred Feet— A Tremendous Pyramid. The Eiffel tower, now .300 feet high, is the sensation of the hour in Paris. M. George Price, a Paris reporter, gives the following account of the work and it* builder: “M. Eiffel lives in a pretty house in Rue Prosny, furnished and decorated in a de lightful fashion, which suggest the artist rather t han the engineer. Eiffel is a man from forty to forty-five years, rather un der the average height; his hair is gray, his eyes bright, his expression quiet and pleasant. One feels at once that he is persistent rather than enthusiastic. In bis triumphs over difficulties, thought and mathematical precision have done the work. M. Eiffel gave gave me a card which entitled me to visit the tower. Af* ter a visit, I must admit that, consider ing the strong doubts I once held, upon {esthetic grounds, as to the advisa bility of the Eiffel tower, the impression made upon me by the realty was alto gether unexpected. I cannot say whether it will be handsome, but I am certain that it will be superb. It is impossible to describe the effect of this gigantic scaffolding of iron in geometric design, the whole forming a tremendous pyra mid. It is majestic, impressive, and yet so light that from a distance the effect against the sky is that of a grand spi der’s web. I walked back and forth un der these great arches feeling very small. I looked on with such amazement that 1 scarcely noticed a bolt of iron which fell from the heights above upon some sheet iron at my feet. “It was 350 steps up to the first plat form, by an easy staircase. Neverthe less 1 was glad to hold onto a firm hand rail. The first platform is not yet en tirely finished. In parts rough boards bridge the space from beam to beam; through the cracks you can see the earth below. I walked cautiously along, and was glad to reach a spot where a solid brick floor held me up. In the center of the platform is an immense opening not yet provided with railings. Peering over the edge, I could see the workmen below, looking like beetles. Around the outside of the tower a railroad runs, bringing beams, sheet iron and other material. Above our heads 160 workmen hammer ed at hot rivets, and the four giant cor ner posts stretched skyward. The view is magnificent. Up I go again, by a wind ing staircase, to the top of the highest beam, held in place merely by chains. The wind whistles through the scaffolding so that we have to hold our hats. But we discover a splendid panorama. Paris lies in sunlight at our feet, with shining domes, the whole veiled in a mist which deepens on the distant hills. The Seine looks like the motionless glass used to imitate water on big relief maps; the Arch of Triumph looks like a paper weight, the obelisk like a needle, and the vendeme column like case. Yet we are only dOO feet high, a third of the way up that is to be. I got back to ground strongly impressed. Owing to a miscalculation the freight motor refuses to go around curves, and the trucks have been returned to the manufacturer to be readjusted. It often happens that a passenger finds his watch almost stopped by the magnetism it has collected on the trip, and it costs $3 to put it in running order again. One per son whose watch was so highly charged as to collect pins and all metallic scraps in its way, buried it in the earth and, it is said, found the electricity was conduct ed off in that manner. Heilman, of lowa, against several life insurance tompanies. Ten years ago, Mr. Heilman, whose life was insured for $25,000, started with J. H. Brown to locate a cattle ranch near the borders of Indian Territory. In a few days Brown reported that Heilman had accidently shot himself. An inquest was held at the nearest village and a verdict of accidental killing returned. The in surance companies, however, were not satisfied, and had the body disinterred and taken to Heilman’s old home, where a dispute as to its identity arose, and Brown confessed that the body was that ot a man whom Heilman had murdered. The companies refused to pay the insur ance, and the court sustained them. After the trial, however, the supposed murdered man appeared on the scene and anew trial resulted in a verdict for the widow, Brown testifying that he had been bribed by the companies to give false testimony in the former trial. Asa last resort the companies have now taken the case to the United States Supreme court. Health is Wealth is our motto, ana who doubts its truth? J., won't rise at the crack of day soon again to get his eye opener. The other morn ing he went into a saloon as usual and called for whiskey, at the same time say ing he would wash it down with soda water, instead of plain water. By mis take the bartender gave him a glass of concentrated solution of ammonia. When he took a swallow of it he was immediately seized with excruciating pains and sank on the floor in agony. Antidotes were given him, and it is ex pected that he will recover, but his mouth and throat were horribly burned, audit was sometime before he could retain any thing on his stomach. Tariff Reform. Instruct Clements how you want him to vote on the Mills bill, and be sure you all go to Word’s for Paints, Oils, Varnishes, Window Glass and Drugs. mayll-tf A correspondent, who recently went to Virginia to interview Mrs. Amelie Rives Candler at her country home, Castle Hill, where she and her husband are spending their honeymoon, found her walking across the lawn and “wearing a fleecy gown of white material, a wide brimmed hat and swinging a parasol in her hand.” She was accompanied by several dogs —a hugecombination of mastiff and bull, an intelligent looking collie, a pug with a double coiled tail, ami a little black and tan which could be put in one pocket. This sounds a good deal like the open ing sentence of a novel. In her next story Mrs. Candler might be her own heroine. One More Effort. Five hundred newsboys were captured by the agents of the Chicago Waifs Mis sion Wednesday and inarched to the bath houses, where six barbers “clipped” their hair, after which they were scrubbed from head to foot Many of them kicked vig orously at the scrubbing process, rend ing the air with their cries, but they had to succumb finally. Anew suit of clothes was presented to each one of the five hundred, and the entire number was then taken on a picnicking excursion. The mission paid the expenses out of its con tingent fund.
