Even the civil war baa but quickened
and deepened our prosperous activities.
Like spring touched mountains of snow
melting quietly into the earth, moisten
ing and frucifying the seed eager for the
harvest, so those mighty armies of the
blue and the gray marshaled for the war
fare of a generation, if such had been de
creed, swiftly and noiselessly disappear
ed, and all that military energy and dis
cipline and skill, streaming into a thou
sand industries, are as beneficient in
peace as they were terrible in war. W hat
prouder spectacle is there for America;
what vision could more worthily simu
late devout gratitude in every American
heart, than that of the States South of
the Potomac, which after the fierce and
wasting stress of four years of war upon
their soil, after the total overthrow of
their ancient industrial system, the de
struction of their wealth, the complete
p val.vsis of their business energies, are
rising together like a brood of Titans,
and under the inspiration of liberty,
peace and assured union, are renewing
the wonderful tale of the earlier years of
the cent.urv, the progress and develop
ment of the great West? The power and
resource of those States in war seem to
have revealed to them their unsuspected
skill and force in peace. The vigor, the
tenacity, the ability, the contested victo
ry upon tliis field for those three famous
days are now working the greater mira
cle.'-* of industrial enterprise. Never be
fore was the sword beaten into so vast a
ploughshare, nor the spear into so pro
digious a pruning-hook. The world’s
imperial deposits of iron has lain dor
mant for years between the coal and the
limestone of Alabama, but only now
has it proved more precious than a gold
mine. From the war, desolated wilder
ness cities have suddenly sprung, hum
ming with workshops and a hundred
trades, and startled Pennsylvania hears
and wonders while Alabama and Georgia
smile in rivalry, and the flaring fur
n res of Tennessee challenge the ancient
fires of the Lehigh mid the Alleghanies.
South Carolina nearly doubles her man
ufactured products in seven years, and
this year they will nearly eaual in value
all the crops of the State, including rice
and cotton. In seven years the assessed
valuation of property in the twelve old
Southern States has advanced nearly
one-third, while the rate of taxation is
diminished. Thousands of ne\y indus
tries, mining, manufacturing, commer
cial and agricultural, arise as in a newly
discovered or lately settled land. To fa
cilitate every enterprise railroads, thor
oughly appointed, penetrate the remot
est valleys. The water courses ere rich
ly burdened with a freight hitherto un
known, and with new industries greater
shill satisfies more various demands,
opens wider commercial connections and
more intimate social relations, and es
tablishes a higher and more opulent
civilization. In all this glittering pano
rama the happiest incident is due directly
to the war. It is the blending of the cap
ital, the people, the energy, the expe
rience. the skill and conviction, of other
States with those of the Southern States,
which has produced this great result. Be
fore the war this was impossible. Every
deepening doubt and angrier divergence
has consumed the heart of union and
only its form remained. This universal
confidence and co-operation, therefore,
are in the truest sense the fruits of union.

There are no longer any October elec
tions in what are known as pivotal
States to indicate or influence the vote
for President in November. There are,
however, States that will hold elections
prior to the November election. Tennes
see elects a Governor on Thursday, the
2nd of August. Alabama has its bien
nial elections on the first Monday in
August . The Arkansas State election oc
curs on the first Monday in September.
Next domes the Vermont election, on the
first Tuesday in September. Maine fol
lows with an election on the second Mon
day in September. Georgia, the only Oc
tober State, has its election on the first
Wednesday of that month.

AN OHIO FARMER.

Two years ago Paul Haller, of Butler
county, Ohio, removed with his family
to Bronwood, Terrell county, Ga. He
brought with him $l5O and a few house
hold goods. The first year he rented a
farm and invested his money in a mule
and necessary farming implements. He
made a living for himself and family the
first year and saved S2OO. With this
money he made the first payment on a
farm of ore hundred and fifty acres, two
miles from Bronwood, which he bought
for $llOO. He has fine prospects for a
big crop and has no fears but that he
can make his payments on his farm, and
in the course of a couple of years be free
from debt and have a good farm. He
might Have stayed in Ohio until he died
and never have any prospect of owning
such a farm. Mr. Haller’s experience is
proof of what we have so often asserted —
that a poor man who is willing to work
and economize, can in a few years become
an independent farmer in Georgia.
The Washington correspondent of the
Baltimore American says: A postmas
ter’s lack of knowledge of working h's
own “nest” lost him an increase of SIOO
on his salary next year. When he sent
his returns in he lacked 81 cents of the
amount called for by the law to permit
an adjustment of his salary. His report
showed the yearly receipts of his office to
be $2,099.20. As the department allows
a fraction over 50 cents to be counted as
sl,the postmaster would have been SIOO
more in pocket if he had had shrewdness
enough to buy 31 cents' worth of stamps
out of his own pocket. Since he sent
report he lias learned his mistake, and
anybody in the county can now kick
him. His was the only case of the 2,500.
It caused much merriment among the
clerks at the postoffice department.
It has long been thought an excellent
thing to mix silver with the other metal
when a bell was to be cast, and many
pious ] ersons have rejoiced at the
thought that the silvery chime of their
church bell was in part due to their gifts.
Now comes a writer in an English scien
tific paper with this paragraph: “I once
asked a foreman in a well-known bell
foundry whether putting silver in a melt
ing pot was of advantage. He replied of
great advantage—to the founder, as the
silver sinks to the bottom, the founder
pours off the copper and tin, and when
the silver has cooled puts it in his
pockets.”
