Health Tip: Colonoscopy By Dr. Richard Pierzchajlo Family Prime Care My doctor recommended at my last appointment that I have a colonoscopy scheduled. I am sure it is just a safety precau tion because I am aging, but what exactly is involved with a colonoscopy? A colonoscopy lets the physician take a look inside your entire large intestine, from the rectum all the way up through the colon to the lower end of the small intestine. The procedure is used to look for early signs of cancer in the rec tum and colon. This has now become one of the more fre quent reasons for performing a colonoscopy. It is recommend ed by the American Cancer Society every 10 years in everyone over age 50, sooner if you have certain risk factors or a family history of colon can cer. It is also used to diagnose the causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits, bleed ing, diarrhea and other symp toms. Colonoscopy enables the physician to see inflamed tis sue, ulcers, bleeding and abnormal growths. Your colon has to be com pletely empty for the colonoscopy to be thorough and safe. Your physician will give you special instructions about how to prepare for the procedure. Inform your physi cian of any medical conditions or medications that you take before the colonoscopy. For the procedure, you will he on your side. You will more than likely be given pain medi cation and a mild sedative to keep you comfortable and to help you relax during the exam. In fact, most patients remember little or nothing about the procedure. The physician will then insert a long, flexible, lighted tube into your rectum and slowly guide it into your colon. The tube is called a colonoscope. The scope transmits an image of the inside of the colon, so that the physician can carefully exam ine the lining of the colon. If the physician finds any thing abnormal in your colon, like a polyp or inflamed tissue, the physician can remove all or part of it using tiny instruments passed through the scope. That tissue is then sent to a lab for testing. If there is bleeding in the colon, the physician can pass a laser, electrical probe, heater probe, or inject special medicines through the scope and use it to stop the bleeding. As with all medical procedures, there are risks involved. Most frequently these can include perforation (causing a tear in the colon), bleeding and reac tions to the medications used. These complications are very uncommon and can be dealt with as long as they are recog nized early. Dr. Pierzchajlo practices with Family Prime Care and is a member of the Tift Regional Medical Center medical staff. Start the year off INFORMED! Get a subscription to The Wiregrass Farmer.
