Page 2 - The Wiregrass Farmer, December 28, 2005 Our hometown heroes by Randall Whiddon Turner County EMS I have written several arti cles in the past telling everyone about the Turner County Fire Department and how desper ately we need to improve our Allen's Tire Service 1-75 & Bussey Rd Open 6 days Free repairs & rota tion on sets of four 567-3390 Fire Department. But, today I want to tell you about another department that is one of the greatest in the state. I am talk ing about the Turner County Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This department is one we can be proud of. This is not to say we cannot improve; the largest room in the world is room for improvement. The people at the EMS have the respect, compassion, and dedi cation to the citizens of Turner County that is unsurpassed. We have a great bunch of people working at the EMS. To be listed, call 567-3655 other day I was talking to Charles Abridge and he said, “Your people at the EMS are great employees; they just come in do their job the best they can do it and then go home. I have been out to see them on a couple of occasions and I went in and they treated me like they have known me for years. They do not com plain; they’re just a good group.” And I have to agree we do have the best people we have had in years. Everyone gets along great, no backbiting, no bickering; they just have Turner County at heart. In addition, I would like to say ‘Thank You’ to the citizens of Turner County and the Turner County Board of Commissioners for being so supportive to the EMS, without your support our service would be nothing. Turner County EMS has been privileged since its inception, July 1971, with having progressive leaders. Deral Dukes, now the Chairman of the Turner County Commissioners started out being the Director of Civil Defense and the Ambulance Service. Mr. Dukes did an excellent job in leading our ambulance service toward the future. Mr. Dukes knew many influential people in the state as well as the federal govern ments; this made it possible to secure grants to help make our EMS service what it is today. After Mr. Dukes left Turner County EMS in 1990, Jimmy Wynn was appointed Turner County Emergency Services Director. Again, our Director was very progressive and led our service into another dimen sion, keeping up with the ever- changing emergency medicine. Words can hardly describe what these two individuals have done for Turner County in making the EMS the best it can be for our citizens, their ability to look into the future so we could be on the ground floor in providing the new and improved EMS around the state. Turner County EMS is very fortunate to have all full-time employees as Paramedics except our secretary, and she is an EMT-Intermediate. Emergency Medical Technicians come in three lev els EMT-Basic,EMT- Intermediate, and EMT Paramedic. We have always felt like the citizens deserved the highest level of care that we can provide. Turner County is fairly unique in respect that we have long transport times since we do not have a hospital in Turner County. Every time someone is transported they have to be taken to a surround ing county to receive emergen cy treatment. With this being said, you can see why our EMT’s need the most training and have the best skills to be able to give the best patient care. Not only do our medics have great skills to perform their job, but they also have the dedication and commitment to the citizens of Turner County. Have you ever realized the sac rifices our EMT’s make for you? We basically have three separate shifts with three peo ple working on each shift; each shift works 24-hour days. We run a 24-7 service, which means every third night and every holiday, one of these shifts are away from their fami ly. And with all the transports being out of town, each shift has to be on-call the 24 hours before their shift, this means they are obligated 48 out of every 72 hours or two-thirds of the time. When it’s raining, freezing, in the sweltering heat of the summer, tornados, hurri canes and any other adverse conditions we are there for you —the citizens of Turner County. These people give a great deal to Turner County, so tell them how much you appre ciate them; they are truly our hometown heroes. In closing, I would like to say it has been an honor to work and be associated with Turner County Emergency Services all these years. I have been so fortunate to have a job that I have absolutely loved. I still love it to this day, just as I did the very first day I started, and I feel most everyone at the EMS can say the same thing. We are your Service; so come by and visit, get your blood pressure checked, or just let us know if there is any thing we can do for you. I know I have my work cut out for me in fol lowing the footsteps of our first two leaders, but I can assure you I will do my very best! In providing this service for you we encounter many dangers, so keep us in your prayers. Hope you have safe and happy holidays. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
