BOE (Continued from Page 1) County as all the board members there had college degrees. The board said no to increasing the amount of train ing needed for school board members, but agreed that a school board member must meet the minimum training requirements before standing for re-election. Among the questions the Board said No to are: • Should the state be allowed to take over a “failed” school system? Mr. .Jordan said he agreed with the No. “Local people elect you and you are responsi ble to them,” he said. Allowing the state to take over would remove any local control over the school system, he said. • Should there be a state code of ethics and conflict of interest regulations. The Turner County Board of Education already has a code of ethics and conflict of interest regulations. • Should school systems review students and make a report to the people of the com munity. Again, this is something the Board of Education here already does. In addition to annual reports on Adequate Yearly Progress, student achievements positive and neg ative are regularly discussed in The Wiregrass Parmer. • Should schools be required to get local input on decisions? “Again, we already do this locally,” Mr. Jordan said. The board felt this is a deci sion that should be left to local communities. There are 5 members of the Turner County Board of Education. • Should someone be pre vented from serving on a School Board if they are employed by a school in anoth er county or a private school system? In overall comments, sever al board members said the pro posals would not make a differ ence to someone really interest ed in running for election. “Anyone who wants to run for the right reasons - if they change all of them (require ments for office), that won’t keep someone from running for office,” said Chris Brown. “If they are true and hard about it, it shouldn’t matter. Somebody comes in with an agenda - they did not like what someone had done, somebody did not vote right - they might not want it,” said Lrances Office. Mr. Jordan said his chief objection was the committee had little input from school systems. “They came up with these recommendations without con sulting with those who do their job successfully every day,” he said.
