Rebels topple Wave; Brookstone next game

Win or go home.
That’s the theme of the
playoffs. And the Turner
County Rebels decided they
weren’t ready to go home yet
as they pulled away in the sec
ond half to defeat the Terrell
County Greenwave 43-19 last
Friday night in Ashburn. The
win advances the Rebels (9-2
overall) to the second round of
the GHSA Class A state play
offs. They will travel to
Columbus this Friday night to
take the undefeated Brookstone
Cougars.
“We came out a little flat in
the first half, but we played
better in the second half. We
had a strong effort there the
whole game. At this point, you
just hope to make it to the next
week so it’s nice to be able to
make it to the second round,”
said head coach Erik Soliday.
Terrell County opened the
scoring early by marching right
down the field and scoring on
4 1 * 1 down from 19 yards out to
take an early 7-0 lead after the
PAT. But the Rebels quickly
marched down the field. EJ
Walker scored from one yard
out after big passing plays to
Lester Green and Hiawatha
Parker. The PAT by George
Gonzolez tied the score at 7.
In the second quarter, after
Terrell County scored to go
ahead 13-8, the Rebels retook
the lead on a 20 yard run by
Walker. The two point try was
no good to make the score 14-
13.
Perhaps the critical point in
the game came right before the
half when the Rebels stopped
the Greenwave at the one yard
line with no time remaining in
the half. If the Greenwave
score, they take a lead into the
half and it is perhaps a different
outcome.
“That was big,” said
Soliday. “I think that gave us
some momentum going into the
half. As bad as we played at
times in the first half, we felt
fortunate to be up by one at the
half.”
The second half was all
Rebels. The Rebels scored
early in the third quarter on an
8 yard run by Walker. All 61
yards on that drive were on the
ground. With the two point
conversion, the Rebels led 22-
13.
That score held until the
first play of the fourth quarter

when quarterback Kevion
Newberry found Todd Lawson
across the middle and he
streaked 76 yards for the touch
down. The PAT made the score
29-13.
After yet another goal line
stand, the Rebels essentially
put the game away with a long
70 yard touchdown run by
Walker. With the PAT, the
score was 36-13.
Late in the game, James
Berry scored from 4 yards out
and the PAT made the score 43-
13. A meaningless 73 yard
touchdown run by Terrell
County as time expired closed
out the scoring at 43-19.
Walker was the star of the
night as he had 156 yards and
four touchdowns on 9 carries.
Newberry was an effective 8-
13 for 249 yard and one touch
down. Lawson had three
catches for 127 yards and a TD
while Parker had 3 catches for
75 yards.
Next up for the Rebels is a
date with undefeated
Brookstone.
“They are big and strong
and very disciplined. They are
very fundamentally sound. But
our kids are excited about
going over there and compet
ing,” said Soliday.
This will be the first trip to
Brookstone for many fans. The
Cougars have been to Ashburn
for various sporting events over
the years. This will also be
Soliday’s first trip to
Brookstone.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
Let’s have a big and loud Rebel
crowd over in Columbus this
Friday as our Rebels continue
in their march through the state
playoffs!
