The Georgia Department of Labor’s Jobs for Georgia Graduates (JGG) Program is a school to work transition pro gram which operates in 37 high schools across the state. The JGG Program began at Turner County High School in 1999. The program model is designed to equip seniors at Turner County High School with pre employment training, work skills, motivational activities, leadership and self-develop ment as well as placement and follow-up services for 12 months after graduation. JGG is a state affiliate of the nation al program, Jobs for America’s Graduates, Inc. On Nov. 5, the Jobs for Georgia Graduates Career Association Officers at Turner County High School attended the 1st Annual Statewide Leadership Development Workshop which was held on the beautiful campus of Macon State College. Approximately 165 student officers were in attendance. The day began with regis tration in the Arts Complex Theatre. Afterwards, we were welcomed to the statewide event by the Jobs for Georgia Graduates Director, Nedra Wakefield. Students then enjoyed a presentation entitled “The Call to Leadership” which was facilitated by Althea Barnette, Senior Training Consultant with the Georgia Department of Labor. During her presentation, Ms. Barnette Officers for the 2008 - 2009 Turner County High School Jobs for Georgia Graduates Career Association are Morgan Newberry- President; LaToya West - Secretary ; Jamail Brown - Coordinator for Leadership Development; Kashunda Griffin - Coordinator for Career Preparation; Maria Moore - Coordinator for Social Affairs; Jessica Robinson -Coordinator for Civic Affairs. incorporated points from Steven Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The presentation was informative as well as interactive as the stu dent officers from across the state sat eagerly in the packed auditorium. The students loved Ms. Barnette’s presentation which included power point and movie clips. The students viewed several clips from the movie, The Great Debaters which gave examples of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The 7 points included: Be Proactive, Control your Destiny or Someone Else Will, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek 1st to Understand, Then to be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen Your Saw. Following the presentation, the students were provided with lunch followed by the Officer Training. The officer training gave the students the opportunity to separate into groups and received informa tion on the specific duties and responsibilities of each office as well as the opportunity to meet fellow officers from across the state. Job Specialists served as the facilitators for each of the officer training groups. The officer groups included Presidents, Secre taries, Coordinators of Career Preparation, Coordinators of Civic Affairs, Coordinators of Social Affairs and Coordinators of Leadership Development. The officers all convened in the Arts Complex Theatre for the wrap-up session. The day culminated by having a student from each officer group share what they had learned during their training session. We were then dismissed and returned to our buses equipped to answer, “The Call to Leadership”. Students had a great time, but wished the day could have con tinued a little longer. of the students The employers in the coun ty are very helpful too, by allowing students to work at their facilities. It is a sort of mentorship. The employers that make this effort really seem to care about our young people and they encourage us to think about coming back home to work once we finish our educa tion. They teach students like me the skills of their profession to help prepare them for things they will be doing in college. They also help students see if that profession is really what they want to purse as a career. One of the most challenging exercises I have been through at South Georgia Banking Company is the preparation for a job interview. There are all sorts of things to remember, from preparing a good resume’, to dressing appropriately, and speaking and writing with cor rect grammar. I truly believe that youth apprenticeship is a great pro gram. I am glad to be able to be a part of it. It has taught me so much. I wish everyone could take part in this great program. The program allows students to actually leave school and go to their workplaces around the county. My name is Cory Lord, and I am a senior at TCHS. I was recently elected as Senior Class President by my peers. I work at South Georgia Banking Company. I leave school at 10 o’clock and return to school at 1 o’clock. I do all sorts of things at the bank, from build ing maintenance, answering the phone, and researching files at the county courthouse. From CORY LORD gets on on Alberson. being at work during the day, it shows the students what really happens at their workplace in a normal day. This program has done a great deal for me. It has taught me things such as peo ple skills, confidentiality, and to have a good attitude with every task I am assigned. I truly enjoy working there. The management and employees do all they can to help me. Mr. Wayne Baxter is head of the program. He does so much for the students in the youth apprenticeship program. -the-job training with Lamerle He is like our teacher; he gives us our grades. He keeps up with our timesheets, employer evaluations, and grades our notebooks. He will also help students who are not employed find jobs so they can partici pate in the program. Mr. Baxter sorts through all the youth apprenticeship applications and finds people who really want a job and are willing to work hard at it. He tries to match stu dents with jobs that will teach them about a career they plan to pursue.
