ing its limit. Ashburn Inn was
fined $640.
Public Safety Training Center
in Forsyth. Ft. Governor Casey
Cagle gave the keynote address
and diplomas to the graduates.
The 160 hour curriculum
included classroom instruction
emphasizing the duties of the
chief law enforcement officer
to their county. The State
Constitution and the Official
Code of Georgia specify the
many duties of the Office of
Sheriff, including service as
detention officers, court offi
cers, law enforcement officers
and administrators. Class ses
sions introduced new sheriffs
to these responsibilities, which
they will assume January 1st,
2009. State and national
Roy Wiley
experts also lectured the sher-
iffs-elect class on the latest
issues concerning jails, civil
procedure, personnel and liabil
ity issues.
The training course was ini
tiated by the Georgia's Sheriffs'
Association, which drafted leg
islation in 1979 requiring every
newly elected sheriff to com
plete this course during the first
term of office.
"I want to commend
Sheriff-Elect Roy Wiley and
this entire group for their com
mitment to serve and protect
the citizens of their countries,"
said Terry Norris, Executive
Vice President of the Georgia
Sheriff's Association. "It's
always exciting to meet a new
class of sheriffs and I wish
each of them luck in their first
term."
Blood drive Jan. 15 at Civic Center
by Beth Reynolds
The first community blood drive in Turner County will be
Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Turner County Civic Center. The
American Red Cross has had a critical shortage of blood during
the entire year of 2008. They urge all eligible donors to make a
commitment to donate on a regular basis in 2009. The following
dates are scheduled for 2009 Jan. 15, March 12, May 7, July 16,
Sept. 17, and Nov. 19. Please place these dates on your calendar
and remember to give blood.
The blood program in Turner County was successful mostly
due to the generosity of the students at Turner County High
School. At every blood drive during 2008 TCHS students gave an
average of over 75% of the blood given. The Health Occupations
class at TCHS sponsors one blood drive per year and at each stu
dent blood drive well over 100 units of blood are collected.
