After an extended football season,
wrestling is now well underway. The
wrestling team went to the Westover
High School to compete in a tourna
ment. Only three guys made it to the
finals. Zane Hasty wrestled to win a
fourth place medal for his weight class
while Cody Whiddon achieved a second
place medal in his weight class. The
team was somewhat disappointed by
the results of the Westover Tournament
because they felt like they could have
done better. The team vowed to wrestle
harder at the next tournament.
On Tuesday the 9th, Tift County
High wrestlers were hosted here. The
Middle school easily put Tifton team
down, but the high school team was
defeated by the Blue Devils. On Friday
the 12th, the high school wrestlers trav
eled to Berrien County. Though they
lost both matches to Thomas County
Central and the Berrien County Rebels,
there was much improvement. Saturday
saw the wrestlers in Cook County com
peting in the 32nd Annual Cook County
Classic. Wrestler of the team made it
further through this tournament. Cody
Whiddon received third place.
Coach Lyons told the team after
wards, “We’re a young team. We have
boys who have never participated in
another sport wrestling for the first
time.”
He also feels like the team is mov
ing forward not backwards.

The Turner County Rebels
and Lady Rebels both had suc
cessful weeks as the boys won
all three of their games and the
girls won two out of three.
BOYS
Playing AAAA Thomas
County Central for the second
time in ten days, the Rebels
again jumped out to a big lead
on the Yellow Jackets down in
Thomasville, and never looked
back, cruising to a 75-61 victo
ry that really wasn’t even that
close. The Rebels had beaten
the Yellow Jackets 61-39 on
December 5th in Ashburn.
Todd Lawson led the way
with 22 points. Ternell Davis
was next with 18 points. And
sophomore Breon Dixon post
ed a triple double with 12
points, 15 rebounds, and 10
blocks.
Next up the boys participat
ed in the GMC Old Capital
Classic in Milledgeville over
the weekend. It wasn’t a true
tournament as no first place
trophies were awarded but it
was obvious the Rebels were
the best team there. It was a
different experience for the
Rebels and Lady Rebels as the
gym, which is normally played
in by Georgia Military College,
only had bleachers on one side
of the gym. It was reminiscent
of a gym you might see in
AAU ball or perhaps at a
YMCA. Nonetheless, it proved
to not be a distraction.
In Friday’s game, the boys
jumped out to a 12-point lead
against Putnam County at the
half and completely dominated
the second half, finally winning
by a score of 85-40. It was the
highest scoring night for the
Rebels on the season. Pearce
had a season high 27 points.
Chris Spears was next with 16
points and Lawson had 10
points.
In Saturday’s game, the
Rebels took on Johnson
County. It was a game that was
physical and low-scoring and it
showed with the half-time
score being 23-11. It was more
of the same in the second half,
with the Rebels finally winning
47-29. The Rebels, by nature,
like to run and get a lot of their
points in transition, but
Saturday night, they proved
they could win this type of
game also. Pearce led the way
with 14 points and Spears
chipped in with 10.
Unofficially, the Rebels
have had 25 dunks through 7
games. That deserves a wow!
GIRLS
The girls started off the
week with a tough loss to
Thomas County Central by the
score of 47-35. The Lady
Rebels actually led 22-18 at the
half, but the second half was
filled with a lot of turnovers
and missed opportunities.
Demetria King led the way
with 15 points.
The Lady Rebels also par
ticipated in the tournament in
Milledgeville. They took on
Twiggs County in the first
game. The Lady Rebels jumped
out to an 18-6 lead in the first
quarter and never looked back,
cruising to a 52-27 victory.
Every Lady Rebel saw playing
time in this game. King led the
way with 16 points and
Kadriana Howard added 8. 12
different Lady Rebels scored.
On Saturday, the Lady
Rebels took on Johnson County
and again jumped out to a big
lead, leading 10-2 after one
quarter. From there on, it was
more of the same and again
everyone got to play. The final
score ended up being 60-24.
Aquera Cross led the way with
14 points and Howard chipped
in with 11 points.
Head Coach Sherri Harris
was quite pleased with her
team’s play throughout the
weekend.
“I’m very pleased with how
we are progressing. We are
looking great on defense right
now and making tremendous
improvement on offense.”
This Week’s Games
Both the Rebels (6-1) and
Lady Rebels (4-3 with all three
losses coming to higher classi
fication teams) will participate
in the Ronalda Pierce
Christmas tournament at the
Civic Center.
This has become an annual
tradition in honor of the late
Ronalda Pierce, who starred for
the Lady Rebels earlier this
decade and went on to play col-
legeiate ball at Florida State.
Due to Christmas, the tour
nament will take place on
Saturday and Monday instead
of the usual Friday and
Saturday format.
The Rebels will be taking
on Calhoun County Saturday
night while the girls will be
taking on Cook County.
