Light of the world
One day, I was taking my 6
year old daughter to the public
school that she attends in our
district. We were discussing
the Birthday party for Jesus
that my 3 year old daughter
was having at her preschool the
next day. My 6 year old looked
at me with a pained expression
on her face and asked, “Mama,
why don’t we talk about Jesus
at my school?”
Her words hit me right
between the eyes. I stammered
to come up with an answer to
her probing question. I could
tell by the sound of her voice
that she was very concerned
about this matter.
I tried to explain as best I
could that her sister attended a
private, church-based
preschool, unlike her public
school, which is run by the
government. Of course, her
next question was, “Mama,
what’s a government?”
Needless to say, I could not
provide a reasonable answer to
my daughter’s question, and
it’s one that I pose to you
today.
Please understand, I don’t
do politics, and this article is
not about government policies,
laws, stipulations, regulations,
or legislation. I just wonder
how a country that was found
ed for the right of religious
freedom has turned into a
Inspiration
country where the mention of
“Jesus”, “Christ”, or “God”” is
frowned upon. In recent years,
a controversy has even arisen
over the use of the words
“Merry Christmas” during the
holidays at certain large retail
businesses.
Quite frankly, I think that
the world is doing everything
possible to take the focus off
the real reason for the season,
Jesus. Christmas is not only
about buying gifts anyway, so
why should we care what the
cashier says to us when we
check out? Why don’t we say
to them, “Merry Christmas,
God loves you!”? What a bet
ter way to honor God and put
the focus back on His gift of
love to the world, not the gifts
we are buying for others.
The sad truth is we all have
gradually pushed Jesus out of
our country, and our lives.
We’re not the first ones to do
so. Jesus was forced out of the
very town he was brought up
in, Nazareth. Luke 4:29 says,
“And (they) rose up and thrust
Him out of the city; and they
led Him to the brow of the hill
on which their city was built,
that they might throw Him
down over the cliff.” (NKJV)
What happens when we
push out Jesus and there is no
more of Him left? Jesus him
self says in John 8:12, “I am
the light of the world. He who
follows Me shall not walk in
darkness, but have the light of
life.” What is left when there
is no more light? Darkness.
The very definition of darkness
is “the absence of light”. The
absence of Jesus is darkness.
Many people are afraid of
the dark. I am afraid of a
world without Jesus. One of
my favorite praise and worship
songs, “Here I am to Worship”,
begins like this, “Light of the
world, you stepped out into
darkness.” That’s what
Christmas is all about; a God
who stepped out of Heaven to
come to Earth and take away
the darkness. Are you walking
in darkness this Christmas sea
son? Turn on the light - Jesus,
the “Light of the World”.
